phil black is there. you heard michael talk about being ashen when they were there and as they left. you are there at this moment. you have been looking an you've been seeing all of the horrific things there on the ground. what has it been like? >> it's confronting, erin. you are firstly struck looking at the large piece of wreckage by the sheer force that was responsible for tearing apart this aircraft in the sky and then when you look closer, you do see the human cost as well. bodies. some of them unrecognizable. you can't tell if they are man or woman, crew or passenger. and there are many of them scattered throughout the fields that surround me now on what is a very dark, cloudy night. even still you can see them in the long grass of these fields. some of them have been marked by small white flags. others not so. there is something of an operation here to at least identify the locations of these bodies and we're told that in some locations they have started to be collected that clearly many of them ha

i want to bringing in phil black. he's at the crash site in eastern ukraine for us. tell our viewers what you're seeing. >> wolf, we arrived only a short time ago very late in the evening here. pitch black. dark fields on each side of us. but scattered around us is evidence of the scale of the physical catastrophic if you like. you can see behind me very large pieces of what was an mh-17 lying here in ice 0lation. it gives a sense of the power of the blast and the scale of the disaster that took place in the skies above because we are told pieces like this scattered over a wide area here, we can't see them just yet, it is very dark here as i say. and then surrounding us, as well, there is tremendously moving evidence of the human cost of what took place here. there are bodies in these fields around us. we can see them. some of them have been marked with small white flags. others not so. the emergency workers here and it's only a small team that are still here tonight say that they believe that they will have found more than 170 so far across an incredibly wide area. s

phil black is there. phil, give me a sense of the crash scene. this crime scene, what's happening there this morning. >> well, john, investigators are beginning their work. and it really is just the beginning and it is still a long way from being adequate. we've seen malaysian investigators on the ground for the first time. the first international team to begin picking through this wreckage in some detail. there are other international experts in ukraine, but it's unclear when they're going to actually get on to the ground itself. of course, when they do, they're going to find a crash site that has been dramatically altered over the last six days. you mentioned that buzz saw incident with the cockpit. that was wherech workers were really cutting the guts out of it, if you like, a few days ago. we saw that, we witnessed it. we've seen lots of other incidents as well involving cranes and other hydraulic equipment used to lift and move large pieces of debris with very little care going into returning them to their original position. that was all par

phil black has more. >> reporter: this is where mh17 scoured the earth with the greatest force and heat. the wreckage that struck here was big. both at the boeing 777's engines and wings, it is likely this is where the fuel load burned off as well. the blaze so intense, metal components melted into the ground. down the road, other big pieces of the aircraft marked the farming landscape. but the smaller debris here also holds real power. some of the common place possessions of travelers everywhere. there is also the more personal. giving little insights into the lives of those who fell with the plane. these were people from around the world with no connection to ukraine's conflict. but their bodies now lie across this war zone. their positions are marked with sticks and white cloth. most of the injuries are too terrible to show or even talk about. pro russian militants are in control here. some show curiosity but there is no obvious intention of quickly recovering the bodies or securing the aircraft. this is a strange, eerie experience walking through the debris field of a passenger jet.

cnn's phil black is the first network correspondent to reach the crash site and he sent us this report. take a look. >> reporter: what remains of malaysian airlines flight 17, its passengers, crew, their belongings and baggage are now spread across a wide area in this region of eastern ukraine. the landscape here is marked dramatically by large pieces of wreckage from the boeing 777. and it is marked very poignantly of the pieces of white ribbon tied to sticks that mark the location of bodies which are yet to be recovered. and there are many of them. this region, this territory is still controlled by pro-russian militants. they have allowed some emergency workers to come in and begin. a very small scale. quite disorganized recovery operation. but what we do not see here are the many highly qualified people that are required to come in, secure the site, begin an investigation and recover the bodies of the many people who had no direct connection to the violence, the crisis in ukraine, until the moment of their death. i'm phil black in eastern ukraine. >> well, more than half of the 298

cnn's phil black is on his way to this crash site. and so phil, we now have -- we see the video. these european investigators have arrived there on the scene. tell me what -- this massive area, many, many bodies. what do they begin with? >> reporter: well, it is a big area, that's what we have heard. and it is very firmly under the control of these pro-russian rebels. and they pose something of a challenge, as you just heard there from these european observers trying to get in, briefly today. they also report, those same observers, the rebels were firing their weapons into the air. as he says, almost hostile, certainly intimidating behavior. and for the world to get an accurate idea of precisely what has happened, caused this, what needs to happen is independent investigators and teams need to get on the ground there and begin examining that wreckage. and then, of course, there is that sensitive issue, dealing with the bodies, which you heard reported, are beginning to deteriorate, to decay, to decompose in the hot summer weather. and days here so far. and already, this is only a

. >> phil black joins us live now from donetsk in ukraine. nse of what's going on at this crash scene, this crime scene now. >> reporter: well, john, we are seeing some activity there. we saw malaysian investigators there on the ground there for the very first time. i think that the real first international team to take a detailed look and begin examining the site in some detail. as you mentioned there, they're not happy entirely with the degree of access and the freedom that they have. there are other international teams in ukraine. but there's still a real question mark about when they can get to the site and begin their work. the work on the site is so crucially important. not least, and primarily, i think, because there could still be further bodies. further remains of the victims, somewhere across that very wide crash site. that debris field that have not yet been found. and then there is still the actual physical forensic examination of the site, trying to piece together precisely what happened. and read as much from that as possible. an

cnn's phil black joins us from the eastern ukrainian city where pro-russian forces are expected to hand over the malaysian airliner's black botches. what's the very latest there, phil. >> well, wolf, we are still waiting. we've been invited to the headquarters of the so called the next people's republic. the headquarters of the pro-russian rebels. we were invited to witness the handover of those voice and data recorders from the rebels to malaysian officials who traveled here and who negotiated this handover. it was supposed to happen two hours ago. there is a crowded room full of frustrated journalists waiting to see this. it still has not happened. the expectation is it will happen tonight at some stage because that is what the malaysian prime minister has announced, wolf. >> and it's both black boxes, right? the flight data recorder, the cockpit voice recorder, both black boxes as they're called. is that right. >> that's what we believe yes which it interesting because only yesterday the leadership of the of rebels were saying we have technical items that might be the black boxes but

phil black live at the scene with the very latest on that. phil, you're at that crash scene. tell us what you're is right now as the sun is coming up. >> john, we've been here through the night. and as the sun, it's been pretty terrible, i've got to say. as the sun comes up, the sights that we are seeing here, well, they're even worse. obviously, you can see this, the example just one part really of the wreckage that as you mentioned has been scattered across a very wide area. it's a big debris field. it's interesting that you've got a big piece here, and then all the other big pieces several miles away. but what we are seeing around here are those bodies. so many of them that are lying, some in the fields, some by the road. there has been some effort by emergency workers here to identify those locations. and you can see that, because that's where they have stuck a stick into the ground and attached a little bit of white cloth to it. this are so many pieces of white cloth, it is really, really quite distressing. but as i say, something of a recovery operation under way here.

cnn's phil black is on the scene for us. ust heard about those two u ukrainian jets shot down. what do you hear where you are? >> reporter: what the pro-russian militants are telling us that they shot down these two fighter aircraft a short distance from flight 17 and they did it using shoulder-mounted missiles. they show beyond the range of any shoulder-mounted system. they have preliminary information showing that the weapons may have been fired across the border in russia. once again in this conflict, one event and two different versions and what it shows is despite the international outrage, really, towards the separatist forces over the downing of mh-17. it has not deterred them or their willingness to take on and surface to air attacks in ukraine's air power. wolf? >> phil, what's the latest from the malaysia flight 17 crash site? it's an eerie sight out well. no investigators, no emergency workers, some journalists and locals trying to get back to their normal lives and really, that's it. no progress, really, in answer

let's go straight to cnn's phil black now at the crash site. phil, 23 the rebels do, indeed, have a black boxes, what will this mean for the integrity of the investigation and, of course, who ultimately will get those boxes? >> well, understandably they're considered very much to be a key item in any possible investigation that could determine precisely what happened to this aircraft. they have remained something of a focus for the international community -- where are they, who has them, have they been corrupted in any way? so now today the leader of the rebels, as you say, the self-declared prime minister of the people's republic of donetsk says he has technical items which may be the voice and data recorders. this comes only one day after he denying having them insisting his rebels were not going through the wreckage looking for anything in this way because they didn't want to any any way damage the scene for any imminent investigation. so he says he might have them, he says that he is willing to turn them over only to international experts,

let's go straight to cnn's phil black at the crash site. if the rebels have the black boxes, where are those train cars where the bodies being taken. >> firstly those train cars at the moment they are somewhere locally in areas controlled by the pro-russian militants and the next step is negotiating their release. what the ukrainian government wants to do is get to train cars to ukrainian government control then it will be the dutch government that coordinates the efforts to identify those victims to ensure the right remains are returned to the right families. when it comes to the flight data recorders and cockpit and voice recorders they may now be in the position of the rebel leadership. they say they have them here securely that might be what the hole world is wondering about. when international experts get here they will hand them over to be examined but only then they say, fredricka. >> and then today at the scene what were you able to witness. >> a significant change over the last 24 hours. early yesterday it was still quite a horrible

. >> cnn's phil black is live in donetsk. phil, what do you know about the trains? >> well, we know that for the first time, carol, professionals from the outside of this reem n region have been able to lay their eyes upon the bodies. they have entered this region touring the site today. the train, we understand, is still, well, it is still in this location. in rebel held territory. the plans for its movements and to what location, they are still not known. and complicating all of this, and it is really the key reason why all of this is so slow, the fact that this is an active conflict zone. here in donetsk, an hour's drive from the crash site, from the area where those bodies are being kept, we can hear and see the result, the smoke on the horizon, the artillery blasts from the ongoing military operation, between ukrainian government forces and those pro russian separatists as well. it is taking place to the north and northwest of the city, around the airport, but also around the train line and it the train station there. there is also a question, if -- about if th

phil black joins us from donetsk.s morning releasing another audio recording seeming to show rebels trying to get their hands on the flight recorders even talking about how russia wants to get its hands on them. when these recordings were released earlier, u.s. officials said they couldn't confirm them but later said they believe them to be true. what about this latest one? does it look to be authentic? >> well, it's interesting, jim. this comes the same day as the rebel leadership says that, yes, we do have items in our possession that may be the cockpit voice and data recorders. a day ago they denied it. they said we're not touching the wreckage. we don't want to contaminate the scene. now they say they do think they have them, will not hand them over to ukraine. only to international expert. they don't trust the ukrainian government. the ukrainian government doesn't trust them too much either so that's why there are those audio recordings that they show -- or i should say they are indicate or they are of a conversa

let's go to phil black who is at the site of the wreckage. hear from the president in a few minutes and as he's done in the last few days, he's going to have some angry words. >> reporter: yeah, i would expect so, but where we are, in donetsk, we're about an hour's drive from the main crash site, we're reminded in a powerful way why this is so complex, this is still an active conflict zone. on the northern end of the city, there's been ongoing fighting here between ukraine kran government forces and militants. we've heard heavy ar tilly and smoke on the horizon and it's a reminder why everything is difficult, hard, and slow. it is the first time international experts have arrived on the ground at the crash site to actually take a look to see what they are dealing with, this is before the whole investigation process and so forth really begins. we've got three dutch forensic experts who are here taking in these sites for the first time. it will be their job to examine the remains of the people who died in this crash. they are the ones that will

>> phil black is our man on eastern ukraine. on the war on the ground right now, does it look, phil, as if the ukrainian military really does have the upper hand? we're having a little trouble, which is totally understandable with phil black. let me go to barbara starr. as we await the president, does it look like the yawn -- ukrainian military does have the advantage right now, they are really making some significant progress against these pro russian separatists in eastern ukraine. >> it does look like they are trying to make progress. we've seen in the last hours, they are making moves to recapture donetsk, which is one of the hot beds of this pro russian separatist movement. they are working all the time. progress until something like this happens and everybody has to basically pause, reevaluate and try and deal with this situation. i think what the u.s. is trying to do at this point is tighten up that intelligence case and show that no matter what the situation is on the ground, the russians are still very deeply involved. >

[ speaking in foreign language ] >>> let's bring in phil black. he is in eastern ukraine, on his way to this crash site, joins me on the phone. phil, a lot to talk to you about. first of all, getting these reports that actually just to further emphasize the tense situation in this region that gunshots are being fired in the air near these european investigators at the site. what are you hearing about that? >> reporter: yes. so these are from the organization of security and cooperation in europe. they are, we believe, the first international team to get on to the ground at the crash site itse itself. they said they have been able to independently inspect a few hundred yards or so of the crash site. and some of the pro russian rebels firing their weapons into the air. we don't know much more than that. we don't know how threatening that behavior was, precisely what the purpose of it was in itself. certainly intimidating behavior. and i guess what it really shows, and this is the key point, that crash site is firmly within territory still controlle

our phil black reports from the crash site tonight. >> reporter: this is where mh 17 scarred the earththe force and heat. the wreckage was big. both the engines and wings, it is likely this is where the fuel load burn off as well. the blaze so intense. melt components melted into the ground. down the road, other big pieces of the aircraft marked the farming landscape. but the smaller debris here also holds real power. some, the common place possessions of travelers everywhere. but there is also the more personal. giving little insights into the lives of those who fell with the plane. these were people from around the world with no connection to the conflict but their bodies now lie across this war zone. their positions are marked with sticks and white cloth. most of the injuries are too terrible to show or even talk about. pro russian militants are in control here. there is no obvious intention of quickly recovering the bodies or securing the aircraft. this is a strange, eerie experience walking through the debris field of a passenger jet. the remains of its crew and passengers are eve

let's go to phil black at the crash site. phil, what more are we learning about those black boxes? >> well, fredricka this is a key part of international concern. where are they? such a key part in determining what happened. one day after the leader of the rebels said we haven't touched the wreckage, we don't know where those voice and data recorders are, they now say we have technical items that may be those black boxes and we're holding on to them in a secure place in donetsk, the regional capital. they say they'll hand them over to international experts when they get here but they're not going to give them to the ukrainian government because they don't trust the ukrainian government. the ukrainian government doesn't trust them either. today the ukrainian government released audio recordings it says are between rebels talking about the need to find those black boxes because people in moscow, the russian capital, want them to do so. take a listen. i'm phil black in eastern ukraine. >> well, u.s. president barack obama says russia likely bears some of the responsibility for the apparent downing of flight 17. he says separatists would have needed sophisticated equipment and training to operate an advanced missile system. he also warned of the potential for ukraine's crisis to spill further into europe. >> i think that this certainly will be a wake-up call for europe and the world that there are consequences to an escalating conflict in eastern ukraine, that it is not going to be localized, it is not going to be contained. what we've seen here is just in one country alone our great allies, the dutch, 150 or more of their citizens being killed. and that, i think, sadly brings home the degree to which the stakes are high for europe. not simply for the ukrainian people and that we have to be firm in our resolve in making sure that we are supporting ukraine and separatists to bring about a just cease-fire and move towards a political solution to this. >> so could this really be a tu

our correspondent phil black was with skiba when he was taken away by armed militants. i know you were trying to see if you can get him back and that's why you've waited to talk about this until now. what happened? >> well, we'd returned, erin, from our day at the mh-17 crash site. this location, this hotel as we were unloading our vehicle, that we were met by a large group of very heavily armed pro-russian militants who were studying us very, very closely. in their company a man in civilian clothing with a photo. that photo was of anton skiba. they moved in very quickly, led him away. that was two days ago. we haven't seen him since. >> what do they accuse him of doing? >> well, as we tried to intervene as all of this was taking place, we approached these men, spoke to them. what they made were allegations against anton skiba. they said he's a dangerous man, that's a quote. they said he's a terrorist. since then we've engaged with the leadership of the pro-russian militants here, they say he may be a ukrainian government agent. those are the allegations made against hi

phil black is there with more on the two downed jets. phil, what can you tell us? >> reporter: these are two su-25s, erin. they are heavily armored, heavily armed. they fly low and attack close. in this case, the rebels say that they were knocked out of the sky by shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles, but the ukrainian government isn't buying it, because they say that these aircraft were flying at a much higher altitude, beyond the range of any sort of mobile missile system. they've said they have some information, preliminary information, without being specific, that suggests it could have been launched. these missiles could have been launched from across the border in russia, which is quite a claim. what it is once again, one incident, two very different stories in this conflict. it shows a patent, if you like, because before the downing of mh-17, the ukrainian -- the pro-russian forces were shooting down ukrainian aircraft. now, six days after that malaysia airliner was knocked out of the sky, they are doing it again. and it shows that the international out

let's first get the latest from the crash site with cnn's phil black. phil is near the eastern ukrainian town of grabove and in that field behind him is where the cockpit of the plane is believed to have landed. phil, can you -- thanks for joining us. >> reporter: hello, fareed. >> about that black box, do you know anything about it? is there any evidence that either the russian, pro-russian forces have removed it or that investigators have somehow found it? >> reporter: officials, no. the pro-russian separatists, the leadership insists that they haven't seen it. they also say that's because they haven't been taking apart the impact zone. they haven't been going through the debris and the wreckage in any way. they claim they've been acting to try to preserve what is here for the sake of investigators who are still yet to arrive here. we know that's not entirely true because we've seen pro-russian gunmen in among the debris and evidence things have been moved and, of course, things have been moved significantly to try and get the bodies out. we saw that j

cnn's phil black is in the east certain ukrainian city of donet donetsk.ou were at the site today. what was the scene like? >> reporter: wolf, it is an eerie scene because for much of the day it looks seemingly abandoned. there is no one there examining securing the site. there is no one maintain agon going operation to try to find remains, victims. the only people out there at the moment are the observers, some malaysian experts and today for the first time, some australian diplomats and a forensic expert, as well. they're traveling around in a convoy from one keel site to the next. and it's very much an assessment that they are doing. it is not an ongoing investigation it is not an ongoing search. the fact that this is not taking place, that no one is still taking responsibility for that site is concerning because this small group of observers and experts are finding disturbing evidence that the initial search operation was less than thorough. on the last two days of being out there, they have found human remains, new sets of human remains on both occasi
