bring back kaitlan collins, phil mattingly, along with david gergen. david, president trump threw a wrench into critical pieces of legislation, now some republicans are on the record voting against bigger stimulus checks. and i suppose some of the republicans will be on the record voting against a defense bill that phil mentioned earlier typically passes every year without controversy or much controversy at all. what do you make of the chaos? >> amidst the chaos, we face an interesting task of donald trump's continuing strength among republicans, especially in the house and senate. we all thought coming into this weekend that the defense authorization, he would win his veto, and his signature on the bill, 80 votes in the senate, 335 in the house, nobody thought that the house or senate might override the veto, that he would lose this. so right now we're in the situation of trying to figure out can donald trump sustain himself on the defense bill, on the stimulus bill, and on the $600 versus $2,000. can he win those votes or not. if he wins them, we're

>> phil mattingly, thank you. >>> down to kaitlan collins in west palm beach, florida. the president making thoughts on pretty much everything, obvious in this folk's tweet fest. what has he said? >> reporter: yeah. he has. one person going after without naming is mitch mcconnell. certainly the fact that mcconnell came to the senate floor, phil laid out there, and did not promise a vote on the $2,000 stimulus checks the president is now demanding is not going to make things better, i don't think, for their relati relationship. the question, whether it is is containing traction forcing mitch mcconnell's hand and going to do something about this, because when the president first rolled out demand for the $2,000 checks, this is isn't that caught his party by surprise. his own officials it negotiating this on capitol hill. so it's really unclear where it's going to end up, but the president who has not made remarks on camera in several days, brooke, has been lashing out at mcconnell on twitter going after republican leadership as weak and really attacking them from all over

collins, thank you so much for that. let's get more on the breaking news with cnn congressional correspondent phil mattingly. let's start with the $2,000 stimulus check bill. what kind of pressure is mitch mcconnell under right now? he didn't seem like he was sweating things too much. and what are his options? >> he's got a complicating balancing act. not only do you have president trump, who still enjoys the faith and support of the vast majority of the republican party, pressuring him on twitter and otherwise, and he's got two republican senators that could determine whether or not he's majority leader in the next congress that are up for re-election right now in runoffs that both support the $2,000 stimulus checks. here's where mcconnell sits at this point in time. just a short while ago, mcconnell introduced his own legislation. it would include those $2,000 checks but also include the two other demands president trump made in exchange for signing the original covid relief package. that is a repeal of those online liability protections known as section 230, as well as a commission to study voter fraud, o
