phil keating is monitoring the situation from venice, louisiana, and he joins us now live. hello, phil. >> reporter: hello, brian. the high winds that are really plaguing all operations out there 48 miles offshore, where the deepwater horizon blew up, burned and, of course, eventually collapsed into the ocean and then causing this massive oil spill. well, this weather could impact president obama's visit here, because the winds are simply that strong right now. coast guard helicopter off in the distance right now testing out the winds. but we do expect the president to land on air force one in new orleans roughly an hour-and-a-half, two hours from now. he was possibly going to fly by helicopter, then all the way out to sea to see some of the very large and growingly larger oil slick out there. then come back here to venice, louisiana, where we are at the nearby coast guard station to get briefed by all officials here on deck. and then make a statement and head back probably to d.c. late in the afternoon. but, the winds and the weather might be flight prohibitive for the pres

flacketting with the latest from -- phil keating with the latest from louisiana. >> this is the third consecutive day of the high winds down here and that is the exact reason why president obama is currently up north of me right now driving his way down south from the new orleans airport instead of flying via chopper. coast guarde ghost card choppers flew earlier and judged it is too windy out there. also bad for the boats in the open water and the gulf of mexico 48 miles offshore and for the third straight day this is hampering any type of effort to try to contain or collect any of the oily water throughout. in fact, only a very small percentage of the orange containment boom lines that they really wanted to be deploying today and yesterday have been because simply it is too rough for the boats and too dangerous for the crews and so in the meantime the oil slick has continued to grow unchecked, unstopped, and, of course, with the northbound flow of the currents and waves right now, heading toward the coastline of several states. >> and there is predictions it could go around florida

phil keating back at his post this morning. phil is live in venice, louisiana, seems like the news down there at times gets grimmer by the day but i think there are positive signs that may prevent -- >> >> reporter: you're absolutely right. >> bill: a further disaster because they're making progress at 5000 feet. maybe you can explain that for us phil. >> reporter: well, first and foremost, you had noaa really yesterday adding more pain to the very important commercial fishing industry in the gulf of mexico. remember on friday, state officials in louisiana banned all commercial shrimping and fishing east of the mississippi river. yesterday noaa now banning about 7000 square miles of federal sea out in the gulf of mexico from commercial fishing just for ten days, a ten day moratorium, but obviously, all the fishermen down here who are currently out of work right now are looking at losing the entire rich spring season that was just kicking in. however, there are efforts being made by bp, as well as federal agencies, to try to stem

we have fox team coverage, phil keating coverage k covering the president's visit. julie kirtz examining the federal response. rick riechmuth is forecasting the weather, going over the cleanup efforts. first to phil. how are gulf residents reacting to the president's visit? >> the one that did come out to the streets in southern louisiana, they did have some signs, thanks for coming. thanks for coming to visit us. some people waved at him. it was basically 750 miles from the down to venice, a quarter mile up from the canal. he is meeting with knan can't thad allen who just yesterday janet napolitano named the actual point person on the federal response and coordination of all operations ongoing out there at the site of this massive oil spill. the deep water horizon, bp's offshore oil rig exploded burned for 36 hours. led to 90 people being rescued. 11 people died. three are still in critical condition. since that time it was discovered there were three major cracks in their pipeline. as you mentioned, the beginning of this report, we don't know, bp doesn't know, no o

phil keating is live in venice, louisiana. >> reporter: as of last night it was 9 miles away just eastwhere i am here out on the fringes of the bayou in southeastern louisiana. the point man for the obama administration on dealing with this ongoing crisis, president obama met with him yesterday just up the canal here from me. nine meals was the -- mines was the threat, and three different spots ruptured at about 5,000 feet below the surface continue to pour oil upwards to the surface unchecked and uncontrolled. even bp acknowledges it doesn't know precisely how much has spilled so far, how much continues to spill, what the daily rate of flow is, but the coast guard's going with the estimate of about 210,000 gallons a day which would make it at least two million gallons of sweet crude in the gulf of mexico. jon: any hope of kind of kinking the pipeline to shut it down? >> reporter: bp continues to hope that maybe today is the day they actually have some success. they're using remotely operated vehicles, basically robotic claws 5,000 feet below the surface controlled by humans up top. an

phil keating is on that side of the story, cape canaveral, florida with more and you are at a factorythey are producing the booms? >> reporter: american boom and barrier, in cape canaveral, florida and it is boom, boom, going on here! i'm telling you. this is oil containment boom and they are making it, manufacturing it, sealing it, as you see here, cutting all of these, essential looks like your backyard swimming pool noodles but they are larger and this is inserted into the pvc fabric and it goes all the way down the line and, eventually, will be strewn out along the coastline, in and around the gulf of mexico. two things you have seen over the past week. as far as video goes, number one, the big oil slick and yesterday from flying, from new orleans to orlando, i knew over some of the ribbons of brown and rust-colored oil over the gulf of mexico. 141 miles of this boom now, strewn along the coastline, trying to protect the fragile wetlands especially in the bayou of louisiana from the approaching oil and according to the command center it is 5 to 10 miles away from the shoreline in
