phil mattingly in philadelphia. an eager crowd is awaiting president biden and former president barack obama. they are trying to pull out the big guns, phil, here in this home stretch. >> yeah. it's something, jim, that underscores pennsylvania, for all intense and purposes, is the center of the political universe the next three days. there's a governor's race. the most important of all is the senate race where democrats are trying to flip a seat, give themselves a cushion given other races they have very much coming down to the wire here. this is a different vibe than any president biden event that i have been to up to this point. a deejay is a few feet away from me, not the norm for president biden. president biden and president obama here in philadelphia in about two hours trying to juice turnout knowing that is the critical element of winning this state. the messages are stim as we heard from the former president earlier today. take a listen. >> democrats may not be perfect. i'm the first one to admit it. i'm not

phil mattingly, who's standing by. nlikely it was fired from russia. that could mean fired by russians inside ukraine or some sort of ukrainian air defense system or something else. surprising that he said that, though. >> yeah. i'm actually quite surprised the president was that candid about what they're going through right now in terms of the process. and i think that also gives you a pretty good window into why they've been so cautious about making any declarations about what exactly transpired over the the course of the evening. and keep in mind the president and his team have been working on this since the early morning hours when they were first informed. the president spoke directly with the polish president. his team has been in direct contact with their polish counterparts over the course of the last several hours as well. then there was this emergency meeting. it was called by president biden. it was attended by leaders of the g7, nato allies that are here in bali for the g20 as well. but the president saying

let's speak now to cnn's phil mattingly who is there in bali as we wait for president biden to come to the cameras. phil, it seems according to white house officials that the president did raise both taiwan and human rights issues with the chinese leader. what do we know? >> reporter: yeah, jim, the white house was very clear that the president was going to be very candid about objections that u.s. officials had, concerns that the u.s. had when it came to china's actions, in particular when it came to taiwan and some of the aggressive behavior. u.s. officials have seen over the course of the last year, particularly in the taiwan strait, but also on human rights issues as well. according to the readout that was released by the white house after the meeting those objections were raised. however, it's important to note that there are a couple of elements here that were critical given just how poor the state of relations had a has been over the course of the last two years. first and foremost it's affected both leaders at least according to the white house agreed to empower their senior of

cnn's phil mattingly joins us live from indonesia with the sun coming up in bali, which is good i guessi suppose it feels like the sun is coming up for the democrats, too, and the political prospects of the president these days. how are they feeling? >> reporter: i don't think there is any question about that. you heard from the president in the lead up to the election and he is obviously an optimist. his aides acknowledge he is generally more optimistic than they are on most things including election results. things largely landed where he thought they were going to in terms of maintaining control of the senate and being in a very real battle for control of the house. while officials don't believe the house is necessarily going to land in their favor the fact they've bucked both the historical trends and the very real economic head winds they believe put the president in a very different place for the next two years and on this trip, which if you think about it could have been in a very different kind of mode of things had things gone very poorly from the election side of things. once

let's bring in cnn's chief correspondent, phil mattingly. are white house officials supportive of the protesters? >> reporter: it's important to look at the language that they're saying here because it tells a story. the story is that there's some caution as they watch what's going on on the ground. they've made very clear they're watching closely what's happening on the ground in china and that they support the right of the chinese people to peacefully protest, also continuing to raise questions about the viability of the zero covid policy that china has pursued. however, they are not echoing some of the things we've heard from protesters particularly as it pertains to chinese leader xi jinping. they're also not trying to get in front of anything they've seen on the ground. that has something to do with what we saw a few weeks ago, president biden sitting down with xi jinping, the first in-person meeting since his administration began, and securing some concrete, if small, steps forward to try to ramp down tensions between the two countries
