let's bring in cnn's phil mattingly here in studio. and vanessa yurkevich is in new york for us. so, phil, i know that the president wants tougher borders, and i know he wants the flow of fentanyl to stop from mexico and canada. is there anything else he's seeking here? >> that's the actual legal. >> predicate for. >> the authorization. the emergency authorization they're utilizing for these tariffs that are supposed to go into place at midnight. the fascinating thing about this, jake, is you look at the agreement, or at least the willingness to pause for a month based on conversations between the u.s. and mexico, both presidents trump was asked explicitly in the oval office today, what does canada need to offer? what do they need to put on the table? what would get them the same pause that you did with mexico? his response had nothing to do with fentanyl. the border or immigration at all. a minute and a half response to it didn't use any of those words. one time he talked about canada being the 51st state. he talked about a trade deficit, inflated it by about $150 billion, and ta

they gave a statement to my colleague phil mattingly, saying he is overseeing the efforts and certainly some mixed messages coming from the white house as it pertains to elon musk and doge. um, so i want to ask you another question about your colleagues in the senate offering amendments targeting doge. all of them were rejected. what is the unified democratic message regarding doge? is there one? >> well, i think i think there is one. i think that doge is operating, uh, unlawfully. uh, i believe that they're making decisions that are sweeping and that contradict, uh, statutory language in legislation that congress has passed into law. uh, and i think that has to be upheld. earlier you were talking about courts. litigation is going to be really important, but we can't have courts kind of squirrel out of their responsibility. they're going to be the place of last resort in adjudicating. which who has what jurisdiction, who has what power. but the kind of sweeping power being asserted by elon musk and, uh, his co president, donald trump. uh, i believe it goes way beyond constitutional norm

i'm phil mattingly in washington, and you are live in the cnn newsroom. and we begin with the breaking news, the markets reacting right now to the first big inflation report of 2025. the dow down, you can see right there about a little over 400 points. nasdaq and s&p both down as well. this is after that critical inflation report showing inflation is going in the wrong direction hitting 3% for the first time since june. i want to bring in cnn's vanessa yurkevich who is going to break down all the numbers. what are we seeing here, vanessa? >> yeah, we're seeing inflation heading in the wrong direction, heating up instead of cooling down. what we're seeing is month over month in january, prices rose by 0.5%. and as you mentioned, 3% annually. that's not a number that we have seen since the summer in june. and it really increased across all categories, prices across all categories. categories were on the increase, but we look at three in particular that really resonate with everyday americans shelter, food and energy. shelter costs up 0.4% on the month. ener

we have with us politico's white house bureau chief, dasha burns, cnn's phil mattingly and axios national political correspondent alex thompson. and phil, you have some reporting taking us behind the scenes at doge. what are you learning? >> i think what's been most striking, and. this came from with my colleague tony sneed, hundreds of pages of court documents, interviews with a dozen or more government officials, and then a lot of government memos that we're able to get our hands on, and some employment agreements as well, is just how deeply and strategically planned and intensively so this was heading into january 20th, and i think there's necessarily an appreciation for how they deployed immediately. we talk a lot about kind of the young engineers who are going agency to agency, getting their hands on i.t. systems. we talk less about the fact that it kind of the critical nerve centers of the federal government, the office of personnel management, the general services administration, we don't talk about them very often on television or in the news in general. those are the backbone of

i'm phil mattingly in washington. and we begin with the breaking news on capitol hill. robert f. kennedy jr. just cleared a major hurdle in his path to become health and human services secretary. the senate finance committee advancing his nomination along party lines. and it all came down to gop senator bill cassidy, who ultimately voted yes. i want to go straight to cnn's manu raju on capitol hill. manu, what more are we learning about cassidy's decision to vote yes? >> well, this was a surprise. well, for people on both sides, they really did not know how he would ultimately come down because he had been struggling with this nomination. he said that publicly last week. he had not made a decision on that as of last night. this morning, he indicated in a post on x that he had had a number of conversations all up until this critical vote, and he posted on social media saying that he had intense conversations with bobby kennedy over the weekend, as well as with the white house. he said he'd received some, quote, serious commitments from the administration. he also indicated that he

cnn's phil mattingly has the answers. >> what is a tariff? it's cool to ask, really, especially with donald trump back in the white house. now, simply put, a tariff is a tax on imported goods. but what does that actually mean? let's try this. say these t-shirts are sold by a u.s. company. some hypothetical, but obviously super cool clothing brand. and you have to have one of these t-shirts. but these shirts aren't actually made in the united states. they're produced by an international company which is outside the u.s. now, that means the u.s. company needs to import the shirt that you covet. now, for the sake of hypothetical, let's just say for 20 bucks a pop, which the u.s. company then turns around and sells for, say, 60 bucks each, which is an insane price to pay for a t-shirt. but hey, look, you do you. but what happens if the u.s. government imposes a tariff on your coveted t-shirt? why? well, historically, there are two triggers for tariffs. one, to protect a domestic industry. in this case, maybe the u.s. t-shirt industry is getting c
