phil mercer, bbc news, sydney. get their young children vaccinated against flu after a surge in suspected cases. under a third of two and three—year—olds have had a jab. the number of patients reporting flu—like symptoms has risen by nearly a quarter in the last week, and the situation could worsen over the christmas period. andy moore reports. for many people, it's an annual ritual, but many others are still missing out. doctors say most people over the age of 65 have been vaccinated, but a lot of two and three—year—olds, regarded as so—called super—spreaders, have not. that's because there was a delay in vaccine delivery from the manufacturers. at the end of the first week in december, only 28% of this age group had got the jab. but now the problem has been sorted and parents are being urged to act now. some school vaccination sessions may not happen tilljanuary, but parents can take their children to a gp right away. for a few people it can be very serious. it is really important as many people as possible get v

phil mercer reports from the blue mountains, north of sydney.l day in australia. the battle to protect life and property seems never—ending, but despite a mammoth firefighting effort more houses have been lost. a seven—day state of emergency in new south wales is giving fire authorities additional powers to cope with dozens of blazes, many of which are burning out of control. the biggest concern for us over the next few days is the unpredictability, with extreme wind conditions, extreme hot temperatures. we have a good idea, a good sense of where the most concerning areas are, but again, when you've got those turbulent wind conditions, embers and spot fires can occur very unpredictably. military helicopters have joined a huge emergency effort that's being stretched to the limit. on the front line, crews, many of them volunteers, have confronted the sheer ferocity of the flames. three firefighters were injured, two of them seriously, when theirfire engine was engulfed by flames. the bushfires are again spreading a toxic haze across sydney and oth

phil mercer reports. stuck in a nightmare. turned a grotesque red, as strong winds pushed out of control bushfires towards the popular seaside town about 500 kilometres east of melbourne. thousands of people were trapped and sought shelter on the beach. some waded into the water to escape red hot embers that rained down. others fled by boat, but most waited patiently for the danger to pass, or for help to arrive. it's still a dynamic and dangerous situation, so we've got embers going into mallacoota at the moment. we've got 4,000 people on the beach there, that are being very well protected by our firefighters. the australian navy could be brought in to provide food, water, and power to communities isolated by the fires. once again, very hot temperatures and gusty winds have combined to make this another dangerous and destructive day. at least two people have died and several others are missing, as dozens of blazes rage in south—eastern australia. the authorities say that many houses have been lost. the new south wales rural f
