new jersey governor phil murphy joins me now for an interview. governor, how big a deal is sports betting as an industry in new jersey now >> it's good to be with you. it's a big deal. first of all, i hope you had the under on the game last night. >> i don't bet. >> it's a big deal since inception, i think the total back in new jersey, which is about 15 months, is $3.5 billion it's a game changer and not just for the sports betting itself but for the ancillary benefits, whether it's in our racetracks or casinos the other big piece as you mentioned, we're now past nevada for several months we want the industry to plant their flag here. we think whether it's regulation, technology expertise, talent, so not just the front end, but the whole package, we think new jersey is ideally suited. >> we're going to speak with jed next hour who thinks sports betting will be legal within 48 states in five years that doesn't give you a lot of time. >> no. first of all, we've already made enormous progress in 15 months nevada had decades of head start on us. but

jointing me now is new jersey governor phil murphy. i think this is fascinating. a lot of people are talking about it. tell us, governor, what you're hoping to accomplish here. what are the real world consequences for businesses and banks that don't comply? >> chris, good to be with you. so, the executive order has three pieces to it. number one, going out to any gun or ammunition or accessory vendors and asking them to come back within 30 days with their principles, their values around gun safety. second piece is to do the same with financial institutions that we do business with, as a state. and then thirdly, and lastly is to review all of the insurance policies that are sold in new jersey which may have the consequence of encouraging irresponsible behavior. we're giving each of those legs 30 days to come back. we'll assess the facts. we enter this with a spirit of goodwi goodwill, but if there are bad actors, we will take steps over time to stop doing business with them. and if they're, likewise, good actors, we will look for ways to do more engagement with the

governor phil murphy signed an executive order mandating that his state not do business to people who don't adopt more stringent gun safety laws. joining me now to tell me more about this governor phil murphy. >> thank you for having me on, ali. >> we've seen across this cony over the last few years, gun safety advocates point this out all the time while the focus seems to be on the congress to pass meaningful gun legislation in fact there has been meaningful legislation passed across the country and they argue in fact a lot of progress has been made on that front. >> ali, it's quite appropriate to have a discussion on public safety on this most solemn of days, so god rest the souls of we lost 18 years ago. yes, there's been progress at the state level because we frankly have no choice. there's inaction in washington. i hope the president has seen the light in senator mcconnell, i'll believe that when i see it. but we have from day one in our administration taken a whole series of actions, executive orders, legislative action forming a coalition with other like-minded states called st

joining us is governor phil murphy of new jersey. thanks for being here.etter from the ceos in a minute. first, i want to hear your rather unusual tactic that you are taking to try to fight gun laws. what have you decided to do? >> so we have been at this since day one. i've been in office about 20 months. they'll spare the long list of executive orders and legislation and other coalitions with other like-minded states. a couple of days ago i signed an executive order which essentially puts our money where our mouth is. it has three parts. number one, if you are a vendor and selling guns or ammunition or related equipment to new jersey, you've got to abide by a set of principles as it relates to gun safety. secondly, if you are a financial institution, and you are lending or investing in those vendors, manufacturers, retailers, you also will have to abide by a set of principles as it relates to gun safety. and thirdly, we're going to review and ultimately ban certain types of insurance that leads to irresponsible gun behavior. and these are big numbers for
