sone was an immigrant's born in south philadelphia. he came up through the streets and he dropped out of high school and he followed his father's footsteps into the philadelphia police department and he earned a reputation as one of the toughest cops on the force fairly early on. he earned the nickname, cisco kid, after a television cowboy. and he just, partly through connections and partly through his own dedication to police work, he rose through the ranks fairly rapidly until 1967 when he became -- was appointed police commissioner and as police commissioner he quickly -- even when deputy commissioner, he was turning into a very controversial figure. in the era of civil rights and urban disorder, philadelphia had its own urban riot in 1964. he came up kind of in relation to all of that, promising law and order. he was very fond of saying that the way to treat criminals was scoffo coppo, an italian phrase translated, to crack their head. while this didn't win him many favors among liberals, among especially the african american commu

philadelphia called little saigon now. there were no vietnamese in philadelphia until after the vietnam war. the literal structure of philadelphia changed because of this war. if we are talking about how 1968 changed america, you just have to go to south philadelphia near the italian market and go to the vietnamese section there. quite -- such a fascinating story, and that is one of the great things about the oral history that was brought up, a lot of folks interviewed people in their communities and they have all been touched by this war. we think about vietnam as a monolith. we don't understand that people were refugees in their own country, and then they were refugees again. just to be brief, you just have to look out the window to see the impact of 1968 on philadelphia. >> one of the legacies along with the militarization peace, wars on crime, etc., but also a lack of confidence in the american role in the world. certainly the u.s. was rightly shaken up about what it was doing, and vietnam was the beginning of that con
