it's about 58 miles from philadelphia, and it falls under philadelphia's air traffic control. so when you're going in or coming out of that airport, philadelphia is one of the busiest airports in the in the country. and so it's a busy, busy area. it's also a very busy intersection where this has gone down. roosevelt mall roosevelt avenue is one of the biggest streets in the neighborhood. roosevelt and cottman is a major intersection. everything is closed down in that area. a few things to know about this. if they. and i'd really like clarity as to whether there were two people on board or six people on board. the minimum complement for a learjet is two, which means you'd have to be your pilot or copilot. if there were more than that. that means there were possibly passengers, possibly somebody being medivaced, possibly medical personnel. unclear why we don't have that information at the moment, but the range of that plane is about 2500 miles. that's a thousand and a half miles longer than the proposed trip. the trip was to missouri, which means that the plane was probably half

northeast philadelphia airport falls under the philadelphia airdrome.ontrol area that controls that area is philadelphia and the philadelphia tower. it's responsible for a lot of incoming and outgoing flights anywhere into the region. it's a pretty busy airport, actually. this flight was coming in from morristown, new jersey. as tom was saying, these learjets are equipped because of the size of them and the range that they can fly, they're equipped to put medical patients on. they can put stretchers on them. very unusual situation, because to fly a learjet, your qualifications have to be pretty high. so we're not quite sure. and we never like to speculate this early into an accident as to what could have happened. but it does seem to have overshot the runway. and when you do that, you end up in a, first of all, a pretty residential area in northeast philadelphia. so it's densely populated. you know, one of the good fortunes we always seen when a, when a, when a plane doesn't land exactly where it's supposed to be is that often it's in it's in an unpopul

chaotic, fiery scenes in philadelphia. this after another plane crash, this time in a busy urban area. this one, a twin engine business jet crashing into a major street near a mall. this all happened shortly after 6:00 this evening. shortly after the plane took off from the northeast philadelphia airport. you can see the massive explosion that erupted right after that impact. the faa says that six people were on board and it was heading to springfield-branson national airport in missouri. ring doorbell video captured the moment of the crash, showing the plane in a nosedive before slamming into the ground. >> yeah, she's she's she's still hanging. >> the plane appears to be rotating as it was falling. it reached an altitude of about 1600 feet before plunging, coming down at 11,000ft per minute. the company operating the flight says one of the people on board was a pediatric patient. air traffic control audio describes the jet as a medevac flight. >> medevac med service. northeast tower medevac med service 056 northeast towe

explained that. >> as you mentioned, i was in philadelphia, i was driving through philadelphia tonight around the time of the crash and when i heard about it i looked at the thermometer on my truck and it said 49 degrees. so it would have been very close to that at 1600 feet which is the maximum altitude that they reached. icing meaning isa coaching the wings and causing the plane to behave erratically and maybe come down, that was not a factor. i have to wonder if they didn't either lose instruments or lose the lighting in the cockpit somehow. right after takeoff. to get only to 1600 feet and come down the way they did suggests they lost control of the airplane. i think that is because they could not tell up from down. now, it could have been a case where maybe they knew they had a problem, maybe they tried to pull back on the yoke and did that incorrectly and something might have fallen off the plane it. if they find a piece of a wing or the horizontal stabilizer tomorrow and somebody's backyard that will tell them a lot about what caused this accident. >> trace: i was reading this e

jason carroll, cnn, philadelphia. >> so as we mentioned, the jets crash in philadelphia comes just days after another deadly aviation disaster, the mid-air collision above washington, dc. investigators have begun interviewing air traffic control personnel there. the national transportation safety board says barges will assist in the salvage operation. authorities have recovered the so-called black box from the military helicopter that collided with the passenger plane on wednesday night. 67 people died in the disaster. initial flight tracking data appears to show the black hawk helicopter flying about 100ft above its allowed altitude and veering off the prescribed route. investigators now have all the black boxes of both aircraft involved. the passenger plane's cockpit voice recorder was found to have water intrusion, which federal officials say isn't uncommon. we'll have more on all of those stories coming up. please stay with us here on cnn. >> newsroom. >> this part changed my life. >> superman. crazy. just that simple little thing over the horse. >> that is tough. because i can feel
