philippe lazzarini, welcome to hardtalk. thank you for having me.l, it is a pleasure to have you in the studio, but i am very mindful thatjust a few days ago you were in gaza looking at your unrwa relief operations on the ground. you've come out, you've had a chance to reflect on what you saw. what were your overriding impressions? it was the second time i went to gaza since the war started, and my impression was that the humanitarian situation has significantly deteriorated. as you said in the introduction, we have 1.7 million people who have been displaced. among them, one million are sheltering in united nations schools or warehouses and premises across the gaza strip. i visited one of these places in khan younis. it's a vocational training centre. we have 35,000 people there. it looked, in a certain extent, like a prison because people shut the door of the compound to prevent new people to come in this shelter... hang on. just let me get my mind around this. 35,000 displaced people in one compound, one facility? exactly. and this used to be a vo

commissioner general of the united nations relief and works agency for palestine refugees, philippe lazzariniome back to "face the nation." >> good morning, margaret. >> i understand you're joining us from amman, jordan this morning. roughly 108 of your staff members in gaza have been killed according to your reports. that's the highest number of u.n. workers killed in the history of the united nations. we are very sorry for your loss. i'm wondering, given that you are sharing your location coordinates with both parties, why is there still such a high death toll? >> yes, margaret. this is definitely a devastating news. the united nation never, ever lost as many staff in such a short period in a conflict. now, it is also true, margaret, that about 70 of our location sheltering more than 1 million people have been hit since the beginning of the conflict and we have about 200 people who have been killed, 100 injured and this despite the fact that we are constantly notifying the israeli authorities but also the de facto government of hamas about our location. >> who is hitting these locations? i'
