we have a philippine national police contingent. everybody here is a colonel in the philippine national police. i met with them today, there are 30 of them. they are -- it is mandatory they take this week training here in the city. a thing we do with them and when they're finished it will be officially commanders. i got to meet them all today, it was a great group. we continue to do our station meetings and had a great time the other day as we closed out our summer internship program for future graduates. we presented checks from sf city to about 20 kids at the police officer association. just to hear the going commentary from the private employers that took these kids from some of the tougher neighborhoods in the city and they're looking forward to having them again next year. the kids are charged with giving us to other kids that are just like them so weak -- two other kids that are just like them so we can grow this next year. there was not a fatal encounter. the suspect was booked into county jail. the details will be discussed

looks like there is a powerful storm east of the philippines. tell us what's happening there. >> yes, catherine. typhoon jelawat has been bringing inwinlds. it is a very strong typhoon packing sustained winds of 180 clkilometers per hour. it looks like it's going to become a violent typhoon within the next 24 hours which is the highest category for typhoon. it's going to move over the north/northwest over the next several days. as it does so, it's going to produce storm forced winds in the eastern parts of luzon. and it looks like it's going to make a move through the southern japanese islands by this weekend. as for rainfall, bulk of heavy rain should stay over the waters. but the east coast of the northern half o of the philippines will see in the region and the south coast is expecting to see heavy rain. and we have another tropical system just to the east of jelawat. this is a tropical depression at this moment. we'll keep you posted on the progress. further to the north, this system which brought rain across japan yesterday is moving out to

we're also seeing some enhanced heavy rain across the philippines. there's a system inching towards parts of northern and central philippines that's going to be enhancing the monsoon here. that could lead to flooding in addition last week's earthquake on friday will have loosened the grounds. there will be an increased risk for landslides and mudslides to occur. 30 degrees in tokyo. down to 29 in seoul. just 26 in beijing which is much cooler than it has been recently. 16 in ulanbator. leslie is increasing in intensity towards the rest of the week. we could be dealing with a hurricane here. it is en route to bermuda. that could create a problem next week. for the time being, though, the only thing to mention to be careful of is that you'll be noticing some problems maybe in the sea and then to puerto rico as well. we're talking about rough seas, sea swells, and rip currents here. it's going to move away from land masses at the moment. we'll see what's happening with bermuda. other tropical activity today, a tropical depression has formed to the west
