whitney houston, you and i talked, phillip seymour hoffman and now this.t seems like sadly, we're talking about stars who had addictions or dealing with issues. and it happens way too often. and talk to us about the stigma and how hollywood deals with these things. >> it is so sad to be here, don. you and i have talked so many times about these very tragic deaths. when this news was announced today, people were so much in shock. so devastated. it reminded us of the death of john ritter. another shocking, shocking celebrity who died way too soon. with robben williams, the way he died. this apparent suicide had everybody talking about, why didn't a lot of people see these signs? we knew he had been in rehab. we knew he had these struggles. but robin williams was someone, as i've been hearing you talk, made so many people laugh. i want to share with you some of our observations attack assess hollywood as i was talking to the crew before i came over here. and what we remembered about robin williams, whenever we were in a junket with him, an interview situation

phillip seymour hoffman died in february of an accidental heroine overdose. jim axelrod tells us death of williams has, again, turned the spotlight on addiction, depression, and suicide. >> reporter: from the moment news broke of robin williams' suicide-- >> hello, life night, how can i help you? >> reporter: the phones started ringing at the national suicide prevention lifeline, and thigh haven't stopped. the last 24 hours has seen the second highest volume of calls in the past 12 months. lisa furst is the director of policy and education. >> whenever there is a public completion of suicide, it spurs people to reach out, especially if they didn't know where to reach out before, as many people may not. >> reporter: the most recent numbers from the centers for disease control show more than 39,000 suicide each year. that's an average of 108 each day. dr. jeffrey borenstein is president of the brain and behavior research foundation. >> more people die from suicide than from homicide in the united states which is an amazing fact. most people don't realize how co

you see it sometimes wihen peope like phillip seymour hoffman died people who touch us with their work who move us and inspire us. robin williams was that kind of person. >> four movies are supposed to come out. do you think it will happen? >> those movies as far as we understand will be completed. the biggest third night of the museum wrapped in may. so that's still on track for a christmas release. some of the other ones are smaller films like merry fricken christmas comedy and they are still looking for distribution so it's not clear when they will be making it to theaters but his work was done in those. >> do you know anything about his personal life, why he would do this? >> i wouldn't even begin to speculate. his pub list mentioned he had apparently been struggling with severe depression had checked himself back into rehab. clearly has had and has been very forthcoming about personal issues in the the past. >> his third wife said she lost the love of her life. our thoughts and prayers are with his family this morning. thank you for being with us. >> thank you ainsley. this is ver

whether it's soldiers returning from battle or anybody fighting these demons, whether it's a phillip seymour hoffman, whether it's a john belushi. everyone is fighting their battle themselves alone in their minds. and everyone seems to have trouble admitting they've got a problem and reaching out for help. robin had done that in the past and had done it apparently recently. what drove him at this particular time, i don't know if we'll ever find out. maybe his family, immediate family knows a bit. maybe a therapist. but certainly i don't know that we ever will. but it was such a far cry from the loving, happy, hopping around, crazy guy that i worked with back then and knew and the joy he brought everybody. it's very -- it's just terrible to hear this, the coroner's report. >> yeah, indeed. i want to bring liz winstead back in. the shock they feel in something like this happening, you think of a comedian as someone bringing joy to so many other people and many people presume that comes from an inner joy. that's not always the case. >> no, i don't think it is always the case. i don't think it's a blank

and i think on a sad note she had been so complimentary of phillip seymour hoffman's performance as truman capotety. he was a big man and somehow managed to inhabit this petite if pirg and mannerisms -- figure and mannerisms. she predicted that evening well before he was to win the oscar that he would do so. and said it was uncanny the way he had been able to capture something essential about truman capote, and i remember making a note to myself that when the book did come out, it would be wonderful to share that with him. and i was actually driving to the airport here when i got the news that he had passed away and felt the sadness i think everyone who admires his work and then a little extra because about the lost opportunity to share with him her appreciation that evening of the movie. she also told me that she wrote the film headachier of the other -- film maker of the other capote movie as they probably don't like to be known, but i believe they come out second, infamous, the one where sandra bullock plays now. and she had into presidented in a photograph -- spotted about a president

we all remember the death of phillip seymour hoffman just a few months about and the international institute of health saying one in 15 american adults suffer from depression. is it worse among comedians? >> they did a study at oxford and found specifically with comedians that they had almost a dual personality, that privately, they were almost introverted and somewhat depressive and then they had this extroverted personality when they're out in the public. when you think about it, comedy is really a way to deal with the painful realities of life in a funny way, so a lot of these performers feel really good when they're in front of the audience and their doing their thing. they get to feel loved and validated. the problem is what happens when these artists who tend to be more sensitive are home alone and have to deal with themselves and deal with their inner demons. that on top of being genetically inclined to have an addiction, which is a disease, or a mental illness, which is also a disease, that just compounds the problem. >> jay, you chuckled when she said a lot of performers have dual p

. >> you know, it's interesting, you know, phillip sip seymour n hoffman's death was a few months agois is affecting people at all economic levels of society, isn't it? >> it is. you've got two sort of groupings here. and at my treatment center, the hills, i have a woman with a 3-year-old child and she takes 50 vicodin a day. she doctor shops because she has, quote, back pain, okay. now, you have a huge group of professionals and women that do not hit the street but go doctor shopping. then i have an addict at my treatment center that's 22 that is shooting heroin so much she has no veins left. so you've got these two types of grouping that create an epidemic with opiate addiction. >> what's interesting, too, with some people it starts with an injury. they start taking a painkiller. and they develop an addition from there. it's a slippery, slippery slope for them. >> well, it's very true. but usually what you're going to find out, if it turns into addition before the painkillers got involved, they were usually abusing other drugs like marijuana, like alcohol. so they were prone to addi
