here you are, pickens plan, it is working. it could happen faster with a little more leadership in washington, but look who bought it. china and russia. i have to laugh because the "wall street journal" said two years ago it looks like china is going to buy the pickens plan before the united states does. well, we had people in russia last week, and the russians are going for it 100%. they are going for natural gas for transportation fuel to get off of diesel, and they will sell their oil, export their oil. good idea and production is cheaper. >> are you happy with where we stand five years in? >> when i first started talking about it, it was kind of like, hey, what's he talking about? natural gas. well, today everybody talks about it. four research papers last week on this very subject came out. you look at the leadership. it's ups, it's at&t, it's fedex, they are oil companies going to natural gas and heavy duty trucks. that's a place to start. just go there and let's see what happens, but get on your own resources in america

now more than five years ago you unveiled the pickens plan.rgy plan of any note out there i think and it was basically pretty simple. cut our dependence on foreign oil and convert trucks and other areas of industry from gasoline and convert them to natural gas. seems simple. how far have you come in five years in getting this concept out there? >> well, first, i didn't say get off of foreign oil. what i said is, get off of opec oil. so break it down. we use about 18 million barrels a day. produce about half of it. and import half of it. the oil that we get from canada and mexico is pretty close, 4, 4.5 million barrels and the rest of it comes from opec. we don't have to have the opec. that is the place to get out of it. put together now, show some leadership now, put together now a north american energy alliance and then use the canadian crude, mexican crude, and fill ours out with theirs. then you've got a real deal going because it gives you all the security you could ever want and you don't need the opec crude. ashley: let's talk about frac

pickens. >> shannon: let's start with the plan.ou say we have what we need to become independent from foreign sources and you say there is so much focus on energy production, but you say transportation in this country could be a key. how so? >> well, there is no question you can replace imported dec weldomestic natural gas. i would like the president to say that all federal vehicles purchased in the future will be on do do mestic fuel. that gives everybody a chance. biofuels, it gives natural gas tgives a battery -- everybody a chance. but the two countries that have bought the pickens plan are russia and china. they are both moving quickly to natural gas for transportation. fuel. that frees up oil from russia to be exported, old and use their natural gas in place of dec nel russia. china is importing oil. so they is not the case. burr they are moving because natural gas is 30% cleaner than diesel. they are moving to natural gas as transportation fuel there. we are going to do it in the united states. we now have the stations that
