we're joined now by abc's chief justice correspondent pierre thomas. pierre, clearly tonight's events having a ripple effect here at home. >> indeed. tonight u.s. law enforcement officials are in a desperate hunt for clues to help the french figure out who is behind this nightmare. the tw countries face common enemies. islamic radicals targeting the tonight france feels only a short distance away from the u.s. homeland. law enforcement officials here worry that the attack may not be isoled and they're stepping up security. there's complete urgency in finding out who is behind this. the critical question tonight, who did it? on the short list of possibilities, al qaeda and isis. in part because of recent history. >> the tactics used in this specific attack are very similar to what we have seen in the past in attacks carried out by al qaeda or isis. it's too early to tell for sure o conducteded it now but it wouldn't surprise me at all if it was either an al qaeda affiliate or isis. >> reporter: just last january, there was a spree of terror in france. t

. >> and pierre thomas, he's told you so many times over the past years, this is his greatest fearar. he believes isis is the greatest threat. >> yes, it k keeps him up at night. and officials have been particularly concerned about isis. in the lt two years, the fbi has arrested at least 70 americans trying to affiliate themselves with isis. special command center, in communication with french authorities. and even though there's no specific threat identified, they're c concerned about the potential for copycats. and the social media campaign of isis, saying kill, kill, kill, wherever you are. >> and the hostage situation now over. but i want to go to brad garrett, former hoste negotiator for the fbi. >> if they only have two shooters, it tells you what devastation one or two shooters can do. my guess is, they knew roughly where they were. it's like, we've got to stop th. they're justoing up and down the aisles shooting people. let's take them out. and looks like they did that in fairly short orde which would suggest a fairly low number of attackers. >> and french president hollande h
