let's bring in chief justice correspondent pierre thomas. pierre, let's talk about where the federal investigation goes from here. the justice department signaling that it's far from over. >> reporter: whit, this section from the affidavit jumps off the page -- prosecutors make clear that they already have potential criminal targets, but note that they're looking for, quote, more. the fbi has not yet identified all potential criminal confederates, nor located all evidence related to the investigation. there's concern these super secret highly classified documents may have been taken the other locations, not just mar-a-lago. the affidavit plainly states there's an effort under way to figure out if anyone took documents while they were stored at the resort for more than a year. given that some of the documents deal with electronic eves dropping, spies and secrets from allies, the fbi and entire intelligence committee are working on a damage assessment. one question that no one has a clear answer to -- why were so many classified documents take

>> all right, pierre. thank you so much. more, let's bring in abc news chief legal analyst dan abrams. dan, there's so much to unpack here. what's the most significant thing we have learned now about the search? >> i think there are two things. number one is how sensitive the documents were. that is relevant no matter how you look at this situation. pierre's reporting certainly brings that to life. the second thing is these documents were subpoenaed. the reason that's important is it goes to intentionality. it goes to whether this was done on purpose. we don't know the answers to those questions. if these documents were subpoenaed and they weren't turned over, the question is why? why were they refusing? why were they hiding? why were they forgetting? whatever the reason is, as a legal matter, that does become very significant. >> dan, as you know, trump's team claims he declassified the documents that the fbi seized. what do you make of that? >> there are two issues there. number one is how you go about declassifying if you
