here's pierre thomas. >> reporter: today, a mother in pain with an unthinkable loss. >> 158 days ago,ear-old twin daughter was walking home from school. someone took her away from me, her siblings. a monster. >> reporter: somer's disappearance last october was a mystery that destroyed the small florida town's sense of innocence. today, police believe they have found the monster. >> jarld harrell has been formally charged with the murder of somer thompson. he contacted somer as she was walking home from school. >> we got you. and you ain't getting away. >> reporter: but today, a crucial question remains. if harrell is the killer, why wasn't he stopped? back in august of 2009, harrell's roommates accused him of having child pornography of his con pumer. they gave the computer to police. that was two months before somer vanished, but no arrest was made on the child porn case until february. >> i think that the police are really going to get second-guessed on this. >> reporter: authorities in florida tell abc news they had to prove the porn really belonged to harrell, and that took time.

pierre thomas has been investigating these threats and joins us with the latest from fbi headquarters. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: hi, robin. that health care debate has been ugly. and this morning, the fbi is trying to figure out if angry words could ignite violence. >> congressman stupak, you baby killing [ bleep ]. i hope you die. >> there are millions of people across the country who wish you ill. and all of those thoughts projected on you will materialize into something that's not very good for you. >> reporter: these threats were for congressman bart stupak, who along with six other peers, provided critically-needed votes to pass health care reform. and letters sent to stupak were just as ugly. in one letter, there's a drawing of a hanging noose, with stupak's name at the bottom of the gallows. >> i think it's a dreadful thing we're going through. >> reporter: congresswoman louise slaughter says someone threw a brick into her offices. and there was a message mentioning snipers. >> the blog we read was devastating. basically, shape up or we'll have a civil war. >> reporter
