cinthia pimentel is tracking the storm for us. what's the latest? >> the latest is that it will continue to push on through at least through the early evening hours. let me show you what i have right behind me. it's the loop of theast 24 hours, where we see all of that moisture from southern california just looping around the state, even through nevada and up towards idaho. in the last couple of hours, it has also sparked up some lightning in the central valley. fresno was under a severe thunderstorm warning, just about an hour ago. we cee aan of this activity still taking that counter clock wise turn. it did pass through the south bay, the peninsula. the roadway is a little slick. take it easy. as temperatures die down as we get into the evening hours, there will be less of a chance of the convection to raise clouds and turn it into thunderstorm activity. let's go over impressive rain totals down there. because of hilary, the san bernardino mountains, 13 inches of rain. we have seen the devastation, and it's just been widespread over southern calif

cinthia pimentel joins us with a quick look at the microclimate forecast. a mild morning out there right now. >> it's a mild morning because we are getting more of that tropical moisture coming into the bay area. morning, kira. good morning, everyone. 66 in downtown san jose. we are noticing some activity around the south bay. i'll get to that in a second. san francisco, starting off chillier at 58 with some of that fog hanging onto the coastline. yes, the storm still continues with hilary down south. we are picking up on activity overnight through the central valley, circling around parts of the sacramento valley and out onto the parts of marin county. lightning is being detected close to hollister as you approach interstate 5 there. so all of that activity, thanks to hilary, which will be downgraded later today from a category 1 to a tropical storm, once it does get into san diego, los angeles, really that storm intensifying as the morning hours continue today. we'll talk about all of the impacts and how close those showers will get today into the bay are

cinthia pimentel is in for kari. when does the warm-up start?eel warm today, even hotter tomorrow. but i wanted to start with what we're watching with idalia over the gulf because this situation could become a little bit life-threatening over the next couple of hours on into the midnight hours of wednesday. right now we're seeing it impacting cuba, with the outer bands there, a lot of thunderstorm activity. but watch how it's becoming more organized as we go into the midnight hours, we're seeing this stretching from tallahassee, cedar key, even to fort myers. this will continue to bring about strong winds, a lot of water rushing in. make sure you're spreading the word and making sure family and friends are prepared for the next couple of days. once it does make landfall, that's when hurricanes tend to lose their strength and eventually the hurricane dies off. back here at home, we are going to see warmer temperatures today. the hottest day is expected to be tomorrow. we'll do mild 77 in downtown san francisco for today, 80 in hayward, and our wa

let's bring in our forecaster cinthia pimentel to break this all down. where is it now? >> if we can pop up our graphic, there she is still churning off mexico's pacific coast, wreaking havoc as it gets closer to cabo. we're giving people more territory, more of a geographical standpoint this hour. she is a category 4 storm, 130-mile-an-hour wind, and she is moving northwest at around 12 miles an hour there with the latest that i was seeing earlier this morning, she could land over the border over san diego as a category 1 storm. >> oh, wow. >> that's the latest update that i have for you. she could come down to a tropical storm, but based on this trajectory, she could still be a category 1 by the time that we get on into sunday afternoon. >> okay, that's sunday. right now there's a tropical storm watch advisory. >> yes. >> the first time ever for southern california. what does that mean? >> this is historic. lots of people have never heard of this. and being alert to these different types of warnings, watches, is going to be very important over the next couple of days i

our cinthia pimentel joins us. the effects of climate change are really piling up this year? >> yeah, they really are ramping up. researchers say that we are starting to see the climate system finally catch up to some of the changes from the last couple of years. so what they're saying is that this summer and really this year, if you think about it as a whole, could be a sneak peek of future seasons and where we begin to see more of these extremes. let's start with the scorching and record-breaking temperatures over the last couple of weeks. these have been amplified by el nino, which is a natural cycle of warmer waters in the pacific. but el nino is just revealing the warmup that's been building over the last couple of years. early decades. as we take a look at this year so far, we can't forget about our record flooding at the beginning of the year. we've gone through the rest of the year into the summer, now heading into mid-august, noaa researchers have counted $40 billion in damage disasters, making it a record for this point in the year. some of these severe weather syst

we want to bring in cinthia pimentel. we know it could change direction at any moment. >> at any moment, with the waters, the winds, anything is fair game. and really the key message is that people heed these warnings and get out on time. right now it's seeing a lot of heavy rain over havana, key west, as it inches closer. as we go into the next couple of hours, strong, sustained winds at around 100 miles an hour. category 3 by the time it makes landfall, later overnight into wednesday, right around cedar key is looking like most of that area where the storm will be concentrated. here is what we can expect as we go through this storm. the early wednesday landfall, overnight hours, makes it very difficult for people to see what's coming with the storm. but i can tell you the gulf waters are very warm, upwards of 80, 90 degrees. that makes a lot of energy for the storm. that's going to bring about life-threatening storm surge, possibly 8 to 12 feet, and that seems to be the deadliest when we do have hurricanes that we're wa

. >> forecaster cinthia pimentel is here with details. we will feel the effect at some point today. >> especially for today, i think mostly near the north bay coast, but then it should start to impact everybody because of the way that the winds are moving around us. let's go out and take a look at what we can expect with the categories today. we'll do moderate from the north bay to the coast and the bay, as well as the santa clara valley, santa cruz, the central coast also seeing this movement of the poor air quality. as we start to track it on our graphic, we'll see around the mendocino coastline, marin county, seeing a little more unhealthy, while the rest of us continue to see hazy sunshine. the winds are moving off of the pacific and that will continue to usher in the wildfire smoke from the pacific northwest. it's very hazardous and as we go into tuesday and wednesday with these winds starting to come a little more offshore, we'll see some of the smoke start to impact through the sacramento valley, coming a little closer to the bay a

here's cinthia pimentel. >> reporter: some homeowners are making the switch from traditional ac units to heat pumps. heat pumps can cool and heat your home. they've been around for decades, but historically, it's been cheaper to burn natural gas. with a system like a heat pump, it will transfer the heat rather than generate the heat and efficiently give us more comfortable temperatures. a researcher at uc davis tells us residential homes are going to be one of the easier things that we can electrify in our battle against climate change. she says this technology can make your on-site emissions at your home zero, meaning we are eliminating the direct burning of fossil fuels. >> the electric grid is rapidly changing and more renewables are being brought online, particularly in california. the mix of the electricity grid is favorable for heat pumps. the grid is going to be a lot better in 20 years. you're setting yourself up to be part of this movement, this fight against climate change. >> it's not only a win for the environment but for our health, too. since emissions can impact things

our cinthia pimentel here to talk about the storm's path, and we saw the sprinkles in a lot of places up and down the corridor. >> down here in the south bay, it felt muggy, too, and we got strong winds at times. let me show you what happened, taking it way back to yesterday morning. we were looking at this system coming in, getting closer to california. it came in as a tropical storm, though, yesterday morning, and just continued to wreak avenue havoc as it got into the mountains, the deserts pommelling them with huge amount of rain. luckily it did wind down and wrapping itself around making its exit through the coastline of the bay area. let's talk about some impressive rain totals that we did see from this rare event. the san bernardino mountains over 13 inches of rain there. these numbers coming to us from the national weather service as more of that data gets collected. they'll give the official stamp and definitely mark this one in history. santa rosa mountains, over 4 inches of rain. that's near, downtown l.a. got swamped with the moisture, an d death valley national park sayin
