pineapple express, very thin band of heavy rainfall which typically moves over the course of two or three days. in this case, it stayed exactly where it was all weekend long. so the north bay kept getting wave after wave after wave of heavy rain and the rest of us didn't get that heavy rain. where do we stand now? is the drought over yet? >> this beaker that's next to me is 36 inches high. that's exactly how much rainfall the north bay should have received over the past 13.5 months, since the beginning of january of 2013. but instead, we've only had 4 or 5 inches. that's it. all f -- all of this is the rainfall deficit. over this past weekend, it poured, up in the north bay, so much that we went from that tiny little line at the bottom all the way up to about 12 inches on average. so we went from this line to this line. that is a huge jump in one weekend. but the drought is not over, because now we have to make up all of this rain to get back to normal. so we made up about one third of our rainfall deficit. but the drought is not over, because we still have two- thirds to go. this thing h

that fire hose that pineapple express is still here.ou can follow the clouds down to hawaii but it's no longer aimed at us because that ridge of high pressure has nudged closer to us taking the storm track to the north. we are talking lots of rainfall that we are missing out on, as well. far northern california oregon cascades, we are looking at anywhere from 4 to 7" of rainfall. so lots of rainfall for redding and points north. when will we get some of that? we'll get a little bit on thursday in the north bay as a weak front moves through but we have a better chance for all of us getting rainfall even down towards san jose and morgan hill. that will be over the weekend saturday night and sunday morning the best chance of rain for all of us. just to show you that the north bay is the only spot going to be getting showers over the next few days, futurecast running through thursday evening at this time ukiah may see .25" of rainfall but nothing more than a few drops for san rafael and san francisco. thursday will be a miss but over the we

we'll go to the weather map with what we're calling the pineapple express. it's a river of moyes moving across southern california. which is great news because we've been talking about the drought there for a long time. pushing from hawai'i to california, sierra, nevada, and we're talking about winter storm warnings in effect. drivers on i-5 use precaution because the ground has been baking for quite some time now. the oils located in the roadways have come to the surface. when you culminate that with the rainfall there will be slippery conditions out there on i-5. the moyes is there and that's great news because people have been suffering with the lack ever heavy rainfall. you can see the areas in green, especially dark green, some areas need up to 36 inches of rain. further east very cold across the north central plains. and 11 degrees in bismarck, you don't like the cold, so it will be a nice day in new york city. >> i don't like the cold, and i don't like the rain, but i'm glad that california has it. >>> it's been a long winter, and it's not over yet, b

i want to talk about the pineapple express. it is nicknamed this because the moisture originates to the east of hawaii. it is this plume of moisture, this river of moisture, that just hits areas like california which is what they normally get this time of year. this will certainly help the drought conditions but we could use certainly a few more of those pineapple express tows get things under control. either way, we are going to see about three to four inches from is an plan and points north. we could also end up with feet of snow in the mountain ranges back through california which once it melts comes summertime that will certainly be much needed water they need out that way. closer to chicago we are going to see about 1 to 3 inches as it pushes eastward. by the time we go into sunday night and monday, that's when we could see a few more inches in areas like new york city and up into boston, too. with most of the snowfall about three inches or so around new england. temperatures in the 20s and 30s in the northeast. and then t
