sergeant barry duggan of the pinole police department posted this video on instagram, outlining the new scam. pay attention here. he says crooks are now heating up the gift card packaging to open it and then to remove the card. they cut off the portion of the card that contains the code, then place what's left back in the envelope. they seal it and return it to the store. then when you buy the card and the store activates it, the thieves have your money. >> with the permission of the store, when you go up to purchase these, as you're purchasing them, remove them from these folders and actually take the card and make sure the whole card is there. >> make sure that entire card is there. some shoppers we talked to today actually said because of these recent scams, they've stopped buying gift cards altogether and are just giving cash instead. cash is king. this is something our consumer investigator chris chmura has been on top of. he put together a how-to video on avoiding gift card fraud. there's a lot of scams out there. check o h for this holiday season at nbcbayarea.com/investigations.

pinole police responded to a scam at a local store. a sergeant posted this video on instagram to alert us as to what we should be on the lookout for. when you buy in gift card, it's wrapped in packaging with the bar code exposed to scan it at the register. but to activate it, you must open it and scratch off an access code. the thieves are taking the cards home off the shelves out buying them, heating up the envelopes, altering the card, and returning them to the store to take your money. >> what they did was they cut off the top that has -- remember, again, this is the code. it gives you access to the money to the person you give the card to. they take the bottom half of the card, which really means nothing now, put it back into the envelope, reglue it shut, and just like that you have a brand-new gift card you think you're getting for your person for christmas. >> reporter: law enforcement recommends you feel the packaging to make sure the entire gift card is inside or with the store's permission remove the packaging and inspect the
