now pinterest shares are down after sales disappointed pinterest management echoing similar with the digital ad space as rivals join what does it mean? we are piecing the puzzle together with rocco strauss. good to have you on early. what is your take from pinterest and their quarter and what should investors focus on the most >> brian, let me draw the picture here in november, we put out the 2023 target of the digital ad market to decline 8% in 2023. now meta and google reported, you see nvidia out performing. amazon is growing on platform business by 20%. and advertising is in retreat. snapped that part of the business down in that quarter. that makes sense with the early recession environment. brands get cut before the performance side let's focus on the three reasons of the declining ad market we see a rise of inventory across platforms with reels and shorts and pins. what is across the platforms is the increase of impression of user growth. there was flat engagement. that was likely not repeated we will hit some ceiling in 2023 the second issue -- >> rocco, sorry, let me jump in

julia, how is it looking for pinterest? >> well, kelly, pinterest shares have fared better.stors stay hopeful about user growth, turning around, continuing to turn around and also a new focus on e-commerce they're expected to grow around 7 million. the company added 12 million last quarter though even with those protected additions pinterest would still be below its pandemic high in terms of users now, analysts are expecting revenue to increase by 5% in the fourth quarter and for the company to guide to 7% revenue growth in the first quarter. now, this is a very different story than what we heard from meta, it reported a 4% decline in revenue for the fourth quarter. a lot of optimism when it comes to driving e-commerce through the platform. >> also, by the way, julia, you will have the ceo on, ceo bill ready after these results. we'll turn to you, jeff. what's your expectation with the stock? what would you do with it? >> i don't want to pull out my pin and poke it but the optimism is certainly interesting to see after earnings we'll find out if they did lose ad revenue meta

with pinterest, but if the shift is away from brand and toward direct response, what do they have to do >> well, it's so interesting snap has about 50/50 brand direct response, according to mark mahaney, who gave us estimates. he also says pinterest is the one most exposed to brand advertising with about 75% of ads coming from brand advertising. pinterest has a new ceo, who's very focused on driving transactions, driving commerce and guests, direct response ads on the platform. so, we'll be hearing a lot from him on monday about what -- when the company reports after the bell, but what the company is planning to really continue that transition into direct response. there's such potential in pinterest, carl, because people go there looking for products, many times looking for products to buy so -- but they do have a lot of room to go in terms of moving away from this reliance on brand advertising. >> obviously, busy week for pin with the layoffs this week >>> up next, we'll dive further into apple's quarter a miss for both revenue and profit is demand deteriorating or can they overcom
