david piper is streaming live from tripoli with the very latest. >> yes. let's start first in sirte, gadhafi's hometown. the fighting is still continuing there at this hour. the revolutionary forces have changed tactics over the last 24 hours. they've been bringing up artillery and tanks to try to pummel gadhafi's followers there into submission. they're holding about a half mile square in the center of the town. we were actually there yesterday. we saw for ourselves these revolutionary fighters putting -- they were hoisting artillery on to the top of residential buildings and firing straight into the town trying to get those people to surrender. so far they have refused. you said also there has been some fighting here in the libyan capitol, tripoli, over the last 24 hours. revolutionary fighters, they've been going house to house today locking for any remaining armed gadhafi supporters here. they were in an area that held occupant the longest during the fight for the revolutionaries that came in over a month ago. now they're looking for them and hoping to

but we begin with david piper, live in tripoli.e want to warn you, some of the video in the reports is graphic. good evening, david. >> reporter: hi, chris. yes, gaddafi's body remains inmn misrata at the moment. they planned bury him secretly today but the criminal court asked for delaying the burial, so their investigation can examine the body. now, the lib ran authority have a difficult decision to make. they don't want gaddafi's burial place to become a shrine to his followers. opponents of his regime have been queuing up today in misrata to take picture of the former dictator's body currently being held in a supermarket freezer. people in the city are angry. there are now calls for an investigation in to how gaddafi died after revolutionary forces confirmed he was alive when they captured him but died by the time he had reached misrata by ambulance. celebrations continue here in tripoli, marking the end to oppressive era. some libyans said they would have preferred gaddafi to have been put on trial and answer for his crimes. t

david piper is streaming live from tripoli. what is the latest on the whereabouts of khadafy's son? >> reporter: he is believed to be neighboring nigr. he seemed to escape this country over the last ten days since his father was killed in sirte. we understand he has been in some kind of indirect negotiations with the international criminal courts. he faces allegations of war crimes there during the eight-month-old libyan civil war. we understand from the national transition council they want him to be brought back here to face justice but this time islam seems to want to negotiate with international criminal court and take his chances there rather than coming back here and facing a trial. >> heather: what is it like there now in libya? it sounds quiet. you see traffic moving behind you? >> well, yes, tripoli is getting back to normal. very much like the rest of the country. we haven't had any reports of major incidents involving khadafy's followers over the last ten days since khadafy died. the country is now trying to move on. it's very slow process here. they still haven't announc

thank you very much. >> gregg: i want to try to get back to david piper streaming live from tripoli. bring us up to date on what is happening? >> reporter: revolutionary fighters are still struggling to take khadafy's hometown of surte. they have been pounding them with artillery for three days but they haven't managed to break through. they changed tactics because they were finding large amounts of casualties and concerns about friendly fire from misurata and benghazi brigades pushed in. national council has said once it falls they will say that libya is totally liberated and push on towards elections, but, of course, there is one other khadafy stronghold still holding up. that is about 19 miles southeast of here in tripoli and there has been fierce fighting there today. it doesn't seem that one is going to fall anytime soon. also today, revolutionary fighters begin tearing down khadafy's stronghold in the center of tripoli. for many years, of course, libyans could not go into that compound. it was very much off-limits with guards station order the fops of those large walls there. s

david piper live in tripoli, libya. david, do we know exactly how this unfolded? so many questions about how exactly he died. >> reporter: hi, megyn. yes, from what we understand he was in a convoy trying to escape his hometown of sirte as the revolutionaries captured it. and there was a nato airstrike on that convoy. he hid in some kind of a pipe in the ground and was dragged out. from the revolutionary fighters we've spocken to, he was alive when testifies captured. -- when he was captured. but by the time he managed to get to misurata in an ambulance, he had a gunshot to the head and to the shoulder, we understand. so it seems somebody during that period perhaps be executed him, megyn. megyn: why was he in sirte to begin with? [gunfire] >> reporter: well, of course, it was his hometown. saddam, as you know, he stayed near tikrit as well, it seems dictators like to go back to their hometowns. also it was a strong position. sirte managed to hold out for two months, they had some very experienced soldiers in that town defending him, it seems, and they did well for
