. >> next am,ed week ahead for oscar pistorius. >> jeff: the murder trial of oscar pistorius resumes tomorrow in southafter cab, and once again miss pistorius will be the star wits js a defendant facing an unrelenting atack bit prosecution, deborah patta is there. >> after last week's grueling turn on the witness stand, oscar pistorius said he was planning to spend this weekend sleeping to rest up for another savaging from the prosecution on monday. he can probably count on that. the prosecution spent the weekend meticulously going through court records to look for errors and inconsistencies in pistorius's evidence. that would just be further ammunition for them after pistorius's dismal performance during his first week on the stand. pistorius has made damaging mistakes on the witness box. the prosecution says it's because he is lying. pistorius claims it's because he is tired. the judge halted his testimony at one point asking if he was too exhausted to continue. >> are you making these mistakes because you're too tired. >> the other problem pistorius has is his inability to control

oscar pistorius began to get increasingly emotional. at one point he had to stop and wretch into a bucket. after he finished speaking, his brother and sister came over to hug him. i think everyone in the court felt they had witnessed a man going through deep, personal trauma. whatever that says about his innocence or guilt, it did not strike anyone in court today that he was somehow playacting. >> what can we expect to happen in the trial later in the week? >> the first thing is the court examination of oscar the story is which could come tomorrow. authorities have given us a glimpse of his pretty aggressive style in earlier cross-examining another defense witness. the question is whether he will choose to try and get oscar pistorius angry on the stand, or having seen the emotional response, maybe he will roll back a bit and not be so aggressive. later in the week thomas we will probably hear from some of the defense forensic experts who are prove thatry and when a neighbor heard a woman screaming comment and was in fact pistorius. neig

what do you make of what's happening, what pistorius is saying right now? >> reporter: sorry, can you repeat the question? >> what do you make of what's happening there in the courtroom right now? >> reporter: well, it's a natural continuation of the strategy that nel started yesterday, and we know that this is always going to be his main strategy in cross examination, which is to set up a number of inconsistencies within pistorius's version of events or otherwise improbabilities in terms of the claims that pistorius is making, in order to set up the foundation for the judge to be able to determine at the end of this trial that there is such a track record of lies and inconsistencies that the only reasonable deduction that the judge can make is that he would only lie so much if he were guilty. so, that's the strategy he's employing. and in order to do that, he needs to take quite a predantic approach and put a number of small details on the record so he can bolt towards this track record. >> this idea that oscar pistorius said he was very frightened of crim

but it got worse for oscar pistorius. gerrie nel, the state prosecutor, introduced a video to the court. there was some objection to this from the defense. in the end it was shown. a video that was shown on media before oscar pistorius's trial began of him at a shooting range. in that video he is seen firing bullets into a watermelon. and commenting that -- there's laughter in this video. then commenting that it was softer than brains. and gerrie nel used that video in very unrelenting and uncompromising style to say, this is what you did to a watermelon. and then this is what you did thereafter to reeva steenkamp. and at that point, the court was shown a picture of reeva steenkamp with a very serious head wound. and this is what the exchange between the two sounded like. >> i've taken responsibility. but i will not look at a picture where i'm tormented but what i saw and felt that night. as i picked reeva up, my fingers touched her head. i remember. i don't have to look at a picture. i was there. >> reporter: you can hea

and what pistorius needs to do is poke holes in that.s factually provided some basis to poke holes in it. and we saw a lot of that actually this morning. so yesterday's testimony was important with regard to his state of mind. we know his defense rests on a mistaken belief, so that's what he was putting on the record yesterday. today he went on a much more factual basis to try to contradict key, pivotal parts of the state's case. for example, we know that much of the state's murder case rests on the supposed evidence of neighbors having heard a woman scream. so they used pistorius' testimony today to put on record the fact that most of the neighbors in fact if not all of the neighbors that were in closer proximity to pistorius' house, they all gave statements saying they did not hear a woman scream and one or two of them in fact, said in the statements that they need a man crying. so they are putting evidence on the record to suggest that there is a doubtful validity on the basis of the state's case. and they were quite consistent in doi

at that point, pistorius lost it again.e said i don't have to look at a photograph. i was there. i saw it. and he began sobbing and court was adjourned at that point for about 20 minutes before he composed himself and came back in. the rest of the day the attorney picked apart small items, statements that pistorius made. small differences in what he said, a pattern of what is expected to be an attempt by jerry nell to show that pistorius is unable to reconcile some things that he said before, with some things that he said in his own statement on the stand over the past three days. cross-examination has now begun. ronan? >> it certainly has begun. that was nbc's mike taibbi. the prosecutor you just heard about in the pistorius trial is a man named jerry nell. his nickname, pit bull. he once spent eight days straight grilling a witness on the stand. what is nell's strategy with pistorius? joining me for an answer to that, attorney tom mesereau representing a range of high-profile clients, including michael jackson. first up,
