his name is robert bowers and lives near pittsburgh. that suspect is now in custody and in hospital as well. here's what we know on timing. at 10:30 a.m. eastern time, the suspect entered the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh. sources tell nbc news bowers had an ar-15-style rifle. he also brought several handguns in addition to that rifle. authorities categorize this mass shooting as a hate crime. the fbi leads this investigation. some of the synagogue's neighborhood gave us a sense of what this neighborhood is like. >> unfortunately, there's nothing much i can do right now. i feel horrible for all those people inside. >> they heard the shots, and they all -- her mom and dad, her friend's mom and dad and son, they just all ran downstairs, i guess, and barricaded themselves in the basement. >> the president commented on this very massacre before boarding air force one earlier today. >> it's a terrible, terrible thing what's going on with hate in our country, frankly, and all over the world, and something has to be done. something has

he is here from the pittsburgh area. the fbi said this evening that they don't believe that he was known to law enforcement before today's shooting. and as this investigation continues to unfold, they tell us his full motive is not known. he is believed to have acted alone, though. investigators are already begun to look at every aspect of his life. they are currently searching his vehicle, several residences in the area that he was associated with, tracking down his movements over the past few days and digging into his social media accounts and on-line communications. that may help provide evidence for a motive. this is being considered a hate crime. this afternoon, the social media site gab which builds itself as a free speech alternative to twitter say it verified and suspended an account matching bowers' name which had made anti-semitic posts including one before the attack this morning which ended with quote i'm going in. the u.s. attorney said he expects to file criminal charges shortly, perhaps as soon as today. j
