flood plains are good places to grow crops because as each flood inundates the plain, it carries with it a muddy sediment rich in organic matter and nutrients. the sediment is deposited in flat layers atop the flood plain and is naturally irrigated by the flood waters. but life on the flood plain is a double-edged sword. the agricultural benefits of those periodic floods are offset by damage to homes and cities, and, in some cases, to the people who inhabit them. the edges of flood plains are marked by levees- ridges of sediment left atop river banks by floods. once formed, levees serve as natural barriers confining rivers during periods of ordinary flow. they may even protect low-lying areas from flooding if the level of a river isn't too high. for this reason, artificial levees designed to contain a river during flood stages are often built. but artificial levees can themselves create problems. by confining the river to a narrow channel, levees accelerate the build-up of sediment, raising the river bed higher and higher. and levees can provide a false sense of security. if a river o

warm clouds and damp weather in chicago, michigan, and some areas of the plains. it will be warm. it won't be a cold period. by the end of this week is when we finally start to see things changing. we'll see a plunge of cool air, not cold, but cool air rushing down from the north. instead of being above average, temperatures will drop. areas like minneapolis who were going to be in the 70s will drop to the 50s. that chilly air will make it to the east coast by sunday. instead of being so extremely warm, we'll go back to where we should be. not a lot of wet weather. showers and storms popping up northern missouri into iowa. that's about it. not a lot of umbrellas needed. later today we will see showers spreading into areas like northern illinois. later tonight and tomorrow southern michigan and areas in upstate new york. as far as the forecast goes for today, it looks to be very mild this afternoon after that chilly start in the morning where you could use the jacket. areas like new york city, we should see temperatures around 70 degrees. veronica, not many problems out there for t

anyone in the plains will tell you how windy it was yesterday. it's continuing to be very windy during the day today. and now with it, we have the rain through areas of minnesota and through the dakotas. it's not a lot as far as cold air behind it, no snow or ice with this storm system. but it's just going to be a big storm that will sit here and spin over minnesota probably for about two days and it will send those storms and rain all the way to the east coast as we go throughout today, thursday, and even into friday morning. so on the radar, not a lot of bad weather rain wise. just light rain from fargo down into sioux falls. that will go into minneapolis today. so if we have any significant airport delay, minneapolis could have delays late today, and then as those thunderstorms head through chicago, st. louis and mississippi and memphis, we could see possible delays there. but as far as the east coast goes, it will be a nice day, with the exception being florida which will be dodging showers and storms. but another october afternoon with a cha

desert southwest, near 100, 80s right along the coast there around los angeles, and the northern plains into the northern rockies is who's getting the cooler air. it was 53 in billings yesterday and even had some snow. and now that chilly air, it's moved as far south as say about salt lake city, and it's moved through colorado, but that's really about it. now that front's going to kind of just sit here. it's not going to make much more progress to the south. that's why i don't think the temperatures are going to cool off much. so, the cool air, northern nevada, up into idaho and montana. the onshore flow's cooled off a little bit, too, over the last couple days in california, and that's going to continue. there are a lot of coastal clouds, you'll be burning off the fog all morning long and then sunshine this afternoon. if you notice the chilly air, it's in the 40s finally through the northern rockies, into 30s at the high elevations, but none of that cool air made it to vegas, at 78 this morning. it's a little cool around portland and medford, maybe a light jacket this morning. you'll p
