some of you know i grew up in public housing, i grew up in plaza east, o.c., out of control projects. the old out of control projects, and similar to the conditions that alice griffith was in, double rock, whatever you want to call it. and similar to the conditions where i spent over 20 years of my life in those conditions, and also feeling isolated, feeling frustrates, blocks away from city hall, feeling like my community didn't matter, like the resources that were all around weren't making their way into our community. and when i became a member of the san francisco redevelopment agency commission, when we started looking at this bayview-hunters point community, i visited. fred blackwell at the time was the executive director of the redevelopment agency commission, and just to step backwards for a minute, when i lived in o.c. -- i mean, plaza east, when we went through the hope six redevelopment, some of you remember that, we tore down 300 units, and there were only 200 units to replace those units. many of my friends and family members never returned. and because of that devastatin

it kept me out of trouble because at that time, my grandmother was raising me, i lived in plaza east, public housing. we didn't have a lot of money, and it was basically easy to go down to the tenderloin and sell drugs. and you know rudy, from united players, exactly what i'm talking about. the point is, i was given an opportunity and things turned out okay with me. but too many young people in our city are not given that same opportunity. some of you all know my story about my family, and i wish some of them were here with me today. my brother, unfortunately, wasn't given an opportunity, and he's still incarcerated, and i think what a difference a program like this could have made. i think about my sister who had an opportunity to participate in this program, but unfortunately, she lost her life. and so when i think about what i can do better in the city, it's not basically continuing to allow the experiences that i had growing up in san francisco to be normal. we are here to change what is normal for young people in san francisco. plaza. there are shuttles that go out to the east side and west side neighborhoods. we'll zoom in and look at those 1 more detail. the vehicular network itself, there's a hierarchy. most are residential, smaller in scale. there are five signalized intersections and the speed limit maximum is 25 miles per hour, everywhere, except the shared public way and it's 15 miles an hour. for places that might not be warranted to have stop signs, we have cars to slow down as they go through the locations. that's highlighted on this diagram here. we know that fire access is important when there's an emergency and need to be able that sure that they get point a to point b to whoever needs help. the curb-to-curb widths are to make sure that we have ample access for the fire department. the loading zones coming back to our conversation last time about things are changing in terms of mobility, how are people going to get on and off the island. one thing that we looked at are loading zones are more desirable than they have been because of ride-share methods. we've worked with accessib

buildings 2 and 3 are the historic hangar buildings, east of the retail block we were talking about. there are two primary open spaces. one is a plaza that's on the west side of building 2. and one is the parking lot, which is the surface parking lot between buildings 2 and 3. we've always been inspired by these buildings. they're grand gestures. and so we need some surface parking around the area, but we should design it to a level that corresponds to the grandeur of the buildings. there will be opportunities to block off the parking lot and have events and festivals like the flea market. and so we really were inspired by this relationship with the hang hangar buildings to the china clipper. it was an opportunity to do something interesting on the surface of this parking lot so people can see when there's special events. so we celebrated the connection between buildings 2 and 3, making sure we have a clear, safe pedestrian path to travel between the two buildings. and we would like to have a life-size stencil of one of the china clippers in the parking lot, the airplane form that you can see here. there will be large shade trees to
