joycelyn moran is in pleasanton. two north lanes reopened after a jack knifed big rig. 680 through sunol and pleasanton. it looks like things have improved quite a bit since we last checked in. >> reporter: exactly. like you said, we have been keeping an eye on this all morning long. they have pulled the big rig to the far left lane. you see that's allowed them to open the two right lanes. we are seeing traffic moving along. chp did not tell us this was weather related. they did say that driver seemed to have lost nttico l.rowe mark embankment. it seems the driver went up the embankment and seems to have lost control. the roads have been wet. be extra careful. it is good news for commuters, especially those taking 680 north. two lanes have reopened. they have been open for 30 to 45 minutes. traffic is moving along. south bound you were talking about that's the commute route. it is busy but we can see how this traffic alert has affected commuters going that direction. they are stopping and looking but i can say in the

in the east bay, pleasanton also hit hard. this raley's grocery store and the surrounding strip mall closed. the store has a generator and brought in refrigerated trucks, but the manager says they still lost thousands of dollars worth of food because of this outage. now we invited pg&e on the program tonight to get some answers as to why these outages are lasting so long. they declined our request for an interview, citing it's been a long day for their team. but they did say this earlier today. >> we're cleaning up from the last storm, but we do try and rest crews. the most challenging thing for us is back-to-back storms. we have had so many storms that we bump up against the 21-day work limit for a lot of our crews. and we'll have to sometimes go beyond that. but generally, if someone's worked 21 straight days, we want to get them some rest. and a lot of our crews have pushed up against that 21-day limit this year with the storms we've seen. with this storm, it came in a little hotter than we were expecting. so we have nine o

we are getting some of that cold rain here in pleasanton. it's something that we could be seeing on and off during your morning commute. yes, pg&e is using relatively new technology. we are talking about drones. this is video from this weekend. pg&e used a drone to restore power to homes on bear creek road in the santa cruz mountains. the drone is large enough to fly the new power lines into the air and reconnect them to the grid. they started using drones last spring and paid about $250,000 to lease them. the utility says unlike costly helicopters, which can be grounded during a storm, drones often still operate in the bad weather. later this morning, not far from where those storms were at, caltrans will shut down the white lane of highway 17 at spots between bear creek and summit road to allow workers to clear fallen trees from the previous storms. the lane closures will be between 9:00 and 3:00 today through friday. we spoke with the division chief of the santa rosa fire department who is encouraging everyone in the bay area to check the

"today in the bay's" bob redell is in pleasanton. pg&e will be using a relatively new technology if the power goes out this time, right? >> reporter: correct. and this will be something affecting the people especially in places like the santa cruz mountains. we are talking about drones. this past weekend the utility used a drone to fix downed power lines in the santa cruz mountains. the drone is actually large enough to fly the new power lines up into the air and reconnect them to the grid. pg&e says it started using the drones last spring. they paid about $250,000 to lease them. they say that they're cheaper than regular helicopters and also helicopters can be grounded during a storm. drones often can still operate. now, later this morning in that same area in the santa cruz mountains, caltrans will shut down the right lane of southbound highway 17 at spots between bear creek and summit road to allow workers to clear fallen trees, and then they'll do the same on the northbound side whenever they're finished with the southbound side.

ab interchange around pleasanton in dublin currently and a little bit further north from there, 6.80, pretty rainy all the way up to walnut creek right now. brett, would antioch pockets of heavy rain around you and solano county. also seeing some pockets of heavy rain there. whatever quieter are in sonoma and napa counties. these are not the areas you typically talk about his being quiet but compared to the rest of the bay and not a ton of rain just yet for you. this is definitely a stronger system. further south. and if you look further south, look at that areas that are flooded already, including the central valley out into the central coast, going to be seeing a big hit of heavy rain from this one. now, temperatures not that cold. this is a warmer system right here. 40's and 50's for current temps focus on the rain jacket this morning won't need too many layers underneath that. just something to keep you dry and certainly going to be a windy one as well. and that's one of the biggest impacts from this system right here is winds that will be packing such a punch 60 miles per hour. p
