there's emergency personnel, police, local police, capitol hill police.bviously, they're deeply concerned about what's going on. john boughtner, one of our photo journalists heard what he says was about a dozen gunshots fired right outside the hart senate office building, that's newest of the three major senate office buildings on capitol hill, and this entire area has now been sealed off by capitol hill police, washington, d.c. metropolitan police. this is a serious situation, clearly, and we have no clue as to what exactly, what exactly happened. jim acosta is joining us, one of our senior white house correspondents. what are you seeing, what are you hearing? >> i'm on the north lawn of the white house where we typically do our live shots and we're going to do something we don't normally do when we stand here reporting live. if we could just pan over to pennsylvania avenue. wolf, we can show you right now that pennsylvania avenue in front of the white house, which is basically a pedestrian area, wolf, is closed off to the public. you cannot walk up and

the capital police, park police, metropolitan police, fbi and other federal agencies, they train together regularly in this city for any type of crisis. washington, d.c. is a highly targeted area. it's always on high alert. so any response like this, until you're able to determine exactly what the cause and motivation is of the perpetrators, you are going to have a multiple agency response to help sort this through. secondly, the joint terrorism task force is typically involved in an incident like this. you describe the scene multiple times as chaotic and that's exactly right. as people try to sort through some of the facts and get the truth. but the jttf will have representatives from all of the agencies, state, local and federal, in the washington metropolitan region, each of them bringing a different area of expertise and different access to information and intelligence to help them put the pieces of the puzzle together. >> shawn, the police officer, the capitol hill police officer gave a press conference not long ago, said he did not believe that this was terrorism related. is that an

capitol police, the u.s. secret service and the other 38 law enforcement agencies that work in this town are very well coordinated. they work together. as soon as the incident occurred on the white house grounds, i'm sure that there was an all points that went out to the other law enforcement agencies. and they were able to consolidate and collapse on her at that point in time. it doesn't look like that she actually got into the capitol. but it does look like the barriers and the protections that were put up in place to protect this sort of thing from escalating were effective. >> bradley -- >> thank you very much, brad shreiver. >> let's listen in to the local affiliate in washington as they can give us more detail from the chopper now. >> we're seeing the situation sort of tighten. security tightened around the white house here at the capitol. the lockdown has been lifted. so is the shelter in place. >> you see some people actually running or walking toward into the building because the gunfire is happening

if you look at the photograph of the police cruiser, that is the capitol police cruiser and this is from the d.c. firefighters local union. and it looks like it's gotten the significant damage to the underside of that thing. and what i'm hearing is that it may have been hit by those barricades that deployed up at the capitol. the question, of course, is the woman's car, the black infiniti. if we zoom in, you can get a real good shot of it, but it does not appear to have that similar kind of damage that we saw to the police cruiser there. and so the chief, they talked about the barricades working as planned, but from everything that i can see here, it looks like the woman, they have somehow made it past that barricades and they have come to a stop behind the guard shack here and how she did that, we're going to have to look into and to find out all of it as it is a big question here. now, the other big question is whether or not that there were any kind of an exchange of fire. and that we are hearing from some sources that she was not armed, that she did not have any weapon that there was

she then sped off struck a police officer and then led police on a high speed chase to the u.s. capitol where again she eluded cops says as police tried to fire on the vehicle and when she led to the third location near senate office building she crashed the car and she was riddled with bullets by the police again with with her child in the back seat it was only then that police say they realized her child was in the car as for why any of this happened and why she was killed we can't know for sure now anyone familiar with this area in d.c. knows that there's a lot of drills going on there's a lot of security checkpoints going on and and really it's hard to drive around so you can imagine someone who might be having some mental illness issues confronting a checkpoint that she wasn't expected to confront and then panicking and driving off and leading to this whole chain of events that happened will be investigations into this i mean we're talking about the two most secure locations probably on the planet the u.s. capitol the white house which might be why police were quick to jump

metro police, capitol police, s.w.a.t. units, a number of law enforcement agencies responding to this high-speed pursuit through th the streets of washington, d.c. at one point you see the vehicle here badly damaged. there was a collision, we believe with this black sedan. there is a police officer who was injured in that crash, certainly in a crash, and you may have seen just a bit earlier what looks to be a police officer on a gurney being airlifted out of that particular scene. and then further along in the chase it all comes to an end, shots are fired. we've heard eyewitness accounts of the gunfire, people in buildings hearing the gunfire, hearing the crash. you can see here the frantic moments of police responding, of people running from that particular scene, trying to get to safety. mike viqueira, our white house correspondent has been following these developments all afternoon, and he joins yo us n. mike, an extraordinary afternoon in washington, d.c. a city where you lived. a city you've covered for years. >> tony

his aides in contact with the capitol police and metropolitan police and the secret service. we have been describing this as an incident that began with a woman who tried to crash the gate at the white house. i want to put that into some perspective. what she actually attempted to get through was a security checkpoint on the southeastern corner of the white house complex, blocks away from any gate that actually accesses the white house grounds. and it would appear that in the arcane nature of the makeup of this city, that drives tourists crazy, pennsylvania avenue, which crosses the north front of the white house, then picks up several blocks to the south, and heads toward the capitol and goes into constitution avenue. so, this involved a woman failing to get through the checkpoint at the southeastern corner of the white house complex, well outside the grounds itself. then turning around and going back down essentially straight toward the capitol, and getting within a couple of blocks of there at no time was the president in any danger. he was in the west wing here, but that
