painters, jackson pollock and jacob lawrence, actress orson welles and burt lancaster, scott dressed louise nevelson, dancer josÉ [inaudible], let me tell you a little about each of the four arts programs. i will start with the federal music project. here's a factoid -- in the united states in 1935 there were 11 recognized symphony orchestras. the wpa added 34 more. they also created work for thousands of other kinds of musicians from cowboy balladeer's two gospel singers to jazz bands. here is the best part. the project director told its workers they should never turn down an invitation to perform and you could hear the wpa musicians play just about anywhere. in parks and playgrounds in schools and hospitals in orphanages in prisons and skating rink's and baseball parks even train stations. this was happening at a time when a lot of people thought that the rise of radio and records in movies and the death of live performance but the response to the federal music program made it clear that americans would turn out in droves for live music if it was easy to get to an easy to pay for.
