this is a law that passed 17 years ago in the aftermath of the terrible abduction of polly klaas. if you have a history of violence and you commit a third crime, you're going to prison for life. what's happened in the meantime is that we're seeing a lot of cases where people had two robbery convictions from the 1980s. then they shoplifted some gum or a pair of socks and end up with a 25-year to life prison sentence. so these backers who include a group at stanford who have been doing a lot of the litigation to try to appeal some of these harsh sentences and millionaire david mills who's involved with them as well have come forward with a proposal that would essentially allow people in prison now for life whose third felony was not serious or violent to appeal their sentences and folks also -- going forward, to not be able to get these sentences. the catch here is that -- we've seen reform efforts in the past. this time around they're saying, yes, if you had rape, murder, child molestation in the past, you can still get thrown in jail for a pair of socks. what we don't want to see
