he told stories about herculaneum and pompeii to the ladies of lenghi offline in 1788. i bet many of you have not seen that painting on the right there. that is the painting of grand tourists in those ruins, those archaeological sites in naples. he painted that in the 1780s. in if you notice, there's tiny figures there. i wonder if one of them is richard st. george. and xavier della gatta was working in naples at the time. this painting is one of his views of naples. it was done in 1780. two years before paintings of the battle of paoli and germantown and richard st. george seemed to have traveled back and forth between ireland, england and europe during the 1780s.st. george later wrote that he -- when he was in naples, he worked with other artists in the city. he actually commissioned one or two portraits of himself, one in black chalk. unfortunately we don't know where those are yet. but we hope to find them. but he seems to have also worked with xavier della gatta to paint to really important moments in his life. we don't have -- we don't yet have the receipt that de
