this is a very different pontiff. among the most popular in recent years, particularly the bond that this president has established with this pontiff. greg burke will be weighing in, my friend and former colleague, now vatican senior communications advisor is with me. they did establish quite a rapport, didn't they, when they met in rome? >> it was a short meeting but clearly there was some pretty good feeling there, there's no doubt about that. now, for whatever can be done in the course of a 30, 40-minute meeting. yet since then, obviously the cuba deal i think was quite big. >> they worked very tightly on that. now you see the pope, first time on american soil. you know, that me. as a cardinal he passed up opportunities to come to this country. >> i think there are two reads to that. the negative read is he wasn't crazy about the united states. he is a latin american. the positive read is he considers himself a bishop and says a bishop is a pastor, he's got to be close to his sheep. >> no photo op opportunities. >>

as we await the pontiff getting here to st.al, who goes through your mind as the leader of notre dame university? >> thanks, wolf, just tremendous excitement and joy. i was at the white house when the pope arrived. i was at his mass and joint session of congress today. i grew up inearliest memories, my dad and jfk and suspicion to be catholic and american. to see the pope address congress today was a tremendously moving experience for me and i'm sure if many other catholics in this country, just a joyful moment. >> what was the highlight from your prospective of that address? >> it is hard to pick out one. i think the highlight was this setting and this very simple elderly man coming in and really moving such a body like the joint session of congress, but he clearly was appealing to the highest american ideas. he was appealing to the best in us. he wasn't speaking about catholic teaching per se the best in american ideals and inspiring us to live up to who we are and the reception he got. i think that in various moments was the

the fourth pontiff to visit the best known cathedral. sade is outside saint pat's waiting for the pontiff to come. >> bill and diana, let me show you the excitement is building along 5th avenue. there are so many people out here since early this morning. some arriving since lunchtime hoping to get a moment with the pope. he always seems to break protocol. they hope it does that today and have that personal moment if you take a look behind me, you will see people with some fluorescent colored vests on. those are people who were part of this renovation project. it was a three-year $177 million renovation project. almost 4,000 stained glass windows cleaned, the marble replaced, ceiling repaired. this is a great honor to work on this project. they are hoping to have a moment with the pope again today. the vesper service begins at 6:45 this evening. the pope will be met by cardinal dolan, robert richie, governor cuomo and mayor de blasio. it is just 2 1/2 years into the pope's papacy. letter pope francis has achieved global appeal. when you l

where you'll be able to see the pontiff without a ticket. pope francis will start his day at the vatican embassy on massachusetts avenue. just across from the vice president's home. there's heavy security and a large perimeter making it difficult for the public to catch a glimpse of him as he comes and goes. the pope heads to the white house for a 9:00 a.m. event on the south lawn. about 10:00 tomorrow morning the pope is expected to take the popemobile out for a parade around the ellipse. he'll head down 17th street, up constitution, and then up 15th street back to the white house. gates to the viewing area open at 4:00 a.m. for those wanting the best view. after the parade, the pope heads across town to st. matthew's in the heart of the downtown business district. some businesses decided to close while others will be open. the pope will return to the embassy -- ♪ -- and then at 3:30, he heads to the basilica for the canonization. the final leg of his day is at 7:00 when the pontiff leaves the basilica and heads back to the vatican embassy.

we've got to make sure everything is looking good for the pontiff when he arrives tomorrow morning. we can only assume that famous fiat will deliver the holy father to the united nations during his first full day in new york city. he will deliver a speech inside the united nations general assembly tomorrow morning. he is described as someone whose presence can break down barriers, whether political or cultural or otherwise. tomorrow his worldly presence and appeal will be tested during that speech here tomorrow. the pontiff will be giving the speech during the 70th anniversary of the united nations, this as the range of intense geopolitical issues will be on the agenda, including the middle east crisis, new efforts to stop extreme poverty and tackling climate change. the pontiff is not expected to take a political position or present ideas as a technical expert, but he will speak as a pastor and prophet. vatican officials have kept silent on the contents of the speech. we know pope francis is a strong advocate for action when it comes to dealing with climate change. in june he relea
