. >>> it's a unique american sport, we're talking about pop warner football.been a growing concern about how dangerous it is for kids. tonight, the league is in the middle of a medical conference in chicago and we're talking with john butler, the executive director of pop warner live via skyp from chicago. thank you very much for talking with us. let me start off by asking this question. there is a lot of talk about concussions and how dangerous football is on the pro level and in the nfl. how much of your new rules changes were driven by the nfl? >> very little, really. the changes came out starting a couple of years ago with the new awareness and a concentration on concussions and interviewed a concussion rule in september of 2010 and in the state of washington and the new rules evolve from now research coming out of virginia tech in february of this year that show the two areas of greatest concern and practices are the number of heads -- hits a child or flayer gets during practice and, cent of all, the full- speed head-to-head contact you mentioned in the n

>> the executive director of pop warner says we are trying to take the head out of football and thatwo big rules that they will start to institute. and let's go over those. the first swone is when they do the tackling drills and this is all about the practice and not play. tackling drills can last 40 minutes max. they are putting a limit on it and you cannot go on and on and secondly no head-on tackling drills starting from three yards away. if you do a head-on, you can't start from four or five yards a i wash, because you obviously gain momentum from the distance, and they want to cut that down. 250,000 kids in pop warner football ages 5-15, so this affects a lot of kids. >> and what you are reporting and sanjay reporting, both of you guys, about leading with the head, and they are trying to lessen that and get people not to do it. what led to the changes? the people being injured is one of them? >> well, one is a virginia tech study and they put the helmets on the kids, and you can't see it, but there are sensors inside of the pads here. >> cool. >> and 7 and 8-year-olds wore these

football league in the u.s. is now changing its rules to reduce devastating head injuries. we're talking about the pop warner a quarter of a million kids play in that league nationwide. what are the changes? >> ages five to 15. some really little ones there. five. i don't know. i don't have sons, but it's a shock that kids play that young. they're looking at what's happening in college football and profootball with the concussions and lawsuits. they have been looking at studies. they want to make it that during practices, this is not about play. it's about practices. you can only spend 40 minutes max tackling drills. also no head on tackling drills from more than three yards away. you build up momentum and the crash is even stronger. >> okay. it's likely to happen those kinds of collisions while in game, but you cut down on those collisions in practice, then you are prolonging the health of these young athletes? >> hopefully. >> then; what's with the helmets? >> this is part of the reason why or the big reason why they made the changes was a because of a virginia tech study. it put sensors inside the helmet.
