and the reason i wrote this book is five years ago, four and a half years ago when he pope game pope francis, i was in a little bit of a lull or a valley if you will around catholicism. there was so much going on with the preoccupation with the vatican banking scandal, cents about islam, the sexual abuse scandal, comments about women, comments about the clothes that pope benedict was wearing ask that sense of what ways going on in rome with the curia was so different from my experience growing up in the catholic church, and nuns and priest i had seen do great work, not only here in america but around the world. i worked for save the children action network and we're the advocacy arm for save the children and all around america when i see our work there are nuns and priest doing great work. this disconnect with what was going on in rome put me in a funk, frankly. when pope francis came out on the balcony at st. peter's asks asked the people to bliss hem before he blessed them that caught me offguard. the fact he was a jesuit and i was educate by the jesuits in high school and college

to this pope taking over. time studying him, went to his home in argentina, and he has a very different view about the rights of humanity and who should be protected and how than this current administration does. can you think this would have been an opportunity for the pope to address those at all with this president? >> i think so. i would not be surprised at all if the pope got his points across. this is a man that's come across as the greatest profit and protection of the poor throughout the world. so he would speak of those values and principals, i think he would. he tells that to all the leaders. this is interesting, chris, when you have these two leaders today, you got the leader of the greatest spiritual authority of the world and the leader of the strongest earthy power. that the two of them would work hand in glove and have more that brings them together and divides them. that's pretty much the history of relations. so i would have hoped that would have continued today. >> it was an interesting demon

the pope, i think, made an appeal to him. the pope is a very persuasive person, a very personable person. he is not somebody you can be upset with. i think he spoke from the heart to the president, talked about his concern about refugees, his desire for peace in the middle east. these are all things that the pope wants to work with united states on. jane: what about the 2 big issues they disagree on, climate change and immigration? how would those issues have come up in this conversation, and would there be any room for reconciliation? >> well, i think the pope would make his position they are, but -- position clear, but he would present it politely, not argumentative. but say that we have to protect the earth. he calls it mother earth. this is an obligation that we have. the pope was trained as a scientist before he went into the seminary, and he trusts the science, he believes the science of climate change, he finds it convincing. and i think he would try and persuade the president that this is something we have to be very

the pope is a champion of migrants. he asked the world leaders to welcome migrants any time they can and anywhere they can. even set an example a couple years ago. he flew to a greek island and flew back in to meet migrants. he took seven families of migrants with syria from him and relocated them in and around the vatican. of course, the persecution of christians in the middle east is a topic on which the fight against the persecution of christians in the middle east is a topic they agree upon. what was not discussed was climate change. another issue they really differ in views. the pope is a staunch supporter of the view by the wide spread scientific community that think that climate change is, of course, caused by human activity, while trump doesn't. but among the gifts that the pope gave to trump was a book that he wrote on the protection of the environment. you can see that, ali, as some kind of veiled message to the president. >> so in the past, the messages between these two men have not been all that veiled. it'

the pope's meeting with president trump will be at 8:30 and a lot of people that wanted the pope give the trump such an early window? it is not exactly prime time, but the reason for that is this audience that the pope holds every morning at 10:00 a.m. and he is not going to move that for anything. something else that came up was the fact that trump will have to enter through an employee's entrance in the vatican, not the grand entrance. that again is because of this. there are serious security concerns around the strip, generally. there are four different groups that the president may take. he's going to be leaving the u.s. ambassador's residence in about three quarters of an hour, an italian police as detonated in conjunction with the american counterpart. four potential risk that president trump in the first lady can take to come here and they are not going to the side until the last minute which want to take. again out of very serious consideration for security. about this conversation between the two men which will take place in the library. the people have speculated about all o

>> i don't know about the pope but it did come up with the cardinal. we had a good exchange. >> how did discussion entail? >> the cardinal was expressing their view they think it is an important issue. i think they were encouraging continued participation in the paris court. we had a good exchange on the difficulty of balancing, addressing climate change and responses and ensuring you have a thriving economy and can still offer people jobs so they can feed their family and have a prosperous economy. that is a difficult balancing act to take. we had a good exchange and look forward to having further talks on climate policy. i immigration didn't come up but migration came up because of the challenge italy faces in particular with the migration from north africa. >> how did he respond to being encouraged to stick with the agreement? >> the president said he is still thinking about it. he told the cardinal and the prime minister this is something he would be taking up for a decision when we return from this trip. it is an opportunity to hear from people. w
