what kind of message is pope francis bringing by canonizing these two popes on the same day? >> reporter: well, first of all, amara, my suspicion would be that francis would say the situation is more complex than just saying john paul is a conservative and john xxiii was a liberal. i suspect he would argue that these two popes had much more in common, actually, than the things that separated them. but at the same time, amara, one thing you dare never forget about francis is that beneath that humble, simple exterior lies the mind of a very sophisticated jesuit politician. and i think his fear, honestly, was that if you canonize one of these two men individually, that it could be seen in the street as a kind of victory lap for one side or another in the church's internal debates. unity built upon a foundation of mercy is the core value for pope francis, and so, i think by putting these two new pope saints together, he's basically inviting left and right to stop fighting with one another and to come together. >> now, this is the key moment of the canonization. let's listen in now

francis as well, for all three of these popes. >> absolutely. >> and once this mass concludes, pope francis the angeles prayer from st. peter's square and may deliver a message. and then after that, the pope will greet the dignitaries in the altar are that you see there of st. peter's square. then the pope will start his popemobile drive in st. peter's square, and possibly in the piazza pio as well. but we're talking about the pope. he will be greeting the dignitaries in the altar area after much of this has concluded. and we mentioned earlier, which i found interesting, are the interreligious delegations that are present, including the jewish delegation, which is considered quite a significant group by the vatican. john and delia, if you can talk a little bit about that and the outreach that john xxiii and john paul ii have done with the jewish communities. >> well, you know, they were both known for their friendship with the jewish communities, and john xxiii, in opening the second vatican council, contributed to a kind of revolution in the way that the catholic church thought of jews. th

pope francis to preside. we have confirmed that pope emeritus benedict will be there. he will celebrate the mass this morning, and there was much speculation about that. i'm lester holt in new york. i'm joined here in new york in the studio by kathleen sproes cummings from the study of the american catholicism at notre dame and a former biographer of john paul ii. with him, father robert barron, also an nbc papal contributor. father barron, if i can start with you, it looks like things have gotten underway on time. can you tell us what's happening right now? >> well, right now the cardinals are processing into st. peters square and while the litany of the saints is being sung. a very beautiful moment. the two new saints are being joined to the role of saints. as the liturgy commences we invoke the great communion of saints. it's a very beautiful and mystical beginning to the liturgy. >> as i went through the rundown, it appears the canonization portion of the ceremony itself is rather short and simple followed by the mass. is that a fair reading of how this will go? >>

your thoughts on what we just heard from pope francis? not only to embody god's mercy in the world, but to do that through a sense of joy. the other thing that struck me, lester, was the reference to john paul ii as the pope of the family. here was a man who was orphaned before his 21st birthday, and yet constantly built communities of friendship around him. and in that square today are some of the now not-so-longer-young people with whom john paul ii worked when he was a young priest in the late 1940s and early 1950s. they were his family. and they're here to celebrate his canonization today as part of the great family of the catholic church from throughout the world. >> so much has struck me in this homily. one was it was typical of pop francis in the simplicity, the deep spiritutuaituality and the brevity. straight to the important. and the importance of devine mercy. and particularly the 20th century. it's one of the most brutal centuries on record. the number of people that suffered, the corpses that were piled up by deeply distorted

we knew that pope francis has a great affinity for pope john xxiii. there was reports that he wanted to be named john. there's a message of unity at the church, wanting to cole esque 26 years of history into a message of unity with the two folks toot. and for two models. >> you mentioned the second vatican council. john xxiii convened. francis had its own coup, convening bishops in rome. what are the plans. did we see a hipt in the message of what he'll deliver in the council. >> what is interesting is the council occurred 56 years ago. implications are unfolding in the church around the world. one is a masteral sense. lisp to them in need. he's called the senate at the vatican in a worldwide meeting of bishops to discuss issues of family. in a sense, this is almost whether pope francis is embracing his own sense of what needs to happen as a council, 56 years on. and they say that it takes about 200 years for a church council to have a full impact. we are 56 years in. it's interesting to see how the pope will manage this on his own. >> and pope franci

pope francis decided to waive the second miracle requirement. and it's not as unusual as you'd think. it doesn't happen a lot but there is a lot of debate within the catholic church, amongst theologians, whether or not two miracles are required. >> there's a weight period, isn't there? almost like the nba or baseball hall of fame, there has to be a certain number of years that pass. pope john paul ii, did that pass? >> right after he died there was this incredible outpouring of support for him. the crowds in st. peter's square chanting "santo subato," which means make him a saint immediately. when pope benedict was elected he decided to waive the five-year waiting period that usually is required after a death before you even start looking at whether or not someone should be on track to become a saint. >> so one pope got an exception for the two miracles down to one, one pope got be a interception for the waiting time. we're hearing world leaders, presidents, but this is somewhat different than standard, it's not a huge three-day affair like it b

reporter: this is four popes because as we said, we had john paul ii and john xxiii but also, pope francis and pope benedict. this is really unprecedented. pope benedict, a former pope before he resigned last year, he was up on that stage right there. this is the first time in 2000 years of catholic church history that you have two popes co-celebrating a mass in public together. so that's why we are talking about four popes, and this notion of unity that you just mentioned, morgan, absolutely right. this is the message that francis wants. traditionally, people have seen john paul ii as the conservative pope, john xxiii as a more liberal, progressive pope. francis says that's too simple. >> that's not what we to express anymore. we want to express a unity. in his sermon today, he said that actually, it wasn't that john paul was the conservative and john was the liberal. it was that john started reforms that john paul continued much that's what francis is really trying to say. perhaps, morgan, he takes a lot of cues from john xxiii. he had said to have brought the church into the 20th centur
