as a teaser, catholic attitudes about pope francis have changed a lot since i was here. john: we have heard a little bit about that. gregory: yes, just to mention that as an aside. if you look at catholic voters as a whole, what you see is that they are evenly divided, and that in any given election, they can swing back and forth. sometimes, they tend to support democratic candidates, whether for congress or the presidency, by narrow margins. other times, they have tended to vote for republican candidates. that is what you see on the surface. ig below the surface, you see that the catholic population in the u.s. is politically polarized along racial and ethnic lines. if you look at white catholics, they have been trending for a long time now in a republican direction. as recently as 2008, the democratic party had an advantage of among white catholics by a percentage point. the share of white catholics who leaned toward the democratic party exceeded the share who identified with the republican category by a point. over the last decade, those numbers have steadily changed.
