i want to tell you a story about an operation here off port morsbey and the gulf of poppa. it's march of 1942. the japanese are moving into the solomon islands. you can see the dates of their expansion. douglas mcarthur is still in the philippines. he's basically saying what is the american jaifvy going to do? the american navy, having done some initial raids in 1942, enterprise and halsey sail and fletcher sail into the gill berts, sort of almost nuisance raised but put the japanese on notice the navy won't take all of this lying down. in march of 1942, lexington and hornet, fletcher is on -- excuse me, lexington and yorktown. fletcher is on yorktown, wilson brown is on lexington and the two carriers together sail into the gulf while the japanese are making this assault against leigh and salahmala. what they do, relatively little known operation, they launch air takes on these beach heads and japanese transports and support ships off leigh. that does two things. the first is it gives the officers on both trips serious training. you have to fly over the stanley mountains, i
