i'm poppy harlow. glad you're with us. thank you for joining us. we start in connecticut. that train collision we have been telling you about all morning and what could be a long delay for commuters next week. the accident happened on a main line linking the bridge port area to new york city. it handles around 280,000 people every week day. and officials there say the tracks could be closed for weeks. there are a number of victims. our susan candiotti, national correspondent, live for us in bridge port this morning. susan, thank you for joining us. i know you rushed right up there. any word from investigators on what they'll be looking for and talking to in this? >> reporter: right, hard to say exactly at this point. certainly one of the things they'll be looking at is was there a problem with the tracks? they'll be talking with the engineers on both trains to find out whether there are any mechanical problems or any human failures. these are some of the key things they always look for in an accident l

poppy harlow is out front. i know you're getting new information at this moment about the child that authorities say is the child of amanda berry. >> when the girls were interviewed, when the three girls were interviewed. they told investigators who amanda berry had the baby in the house of ariel castro, and the baby was delivered by one of the other captive girls, by michelle knight. amanda berry had the baby in the house. and it was delivered by michelle knight. we're also told by that source, when amanda went into labor. he grabbed michelle, ariel castro grabbed michelle and told michelle to deliver the baby. that baby we are told was born into a plastic tub of some sort. again, born into some plastic tub, and we're also told that when this baby was born, it apparently stopped breathing and everyone started to scream, started to panic, and ariel castro said, if that baby dies, i'm going to kill you. a complete scene of panic is what is being painted here, with one of the captive girls being told she had to d

i'm poppy harlow, thank you for starting your sunday with us. >>> we start with that severe weather that we were telling you about. this is what we were working on yesterday. tornadoes, this one touching down in central kansas, specifically in rosell, kansas. it destroyed a house, n no injus reported. >>> dozens of counties in alabama were under warnings and watches throughout the day on saturday. heavy rains, hail and a couple heavy tornadoes, that was a light day compared to frankly what we were seeing and expecting lately. with as many as 20 million people in the path. let's bring in alexandria steele with me this morning in the severe weather center. what can you tell us about the latest? >> certainly today a more widespread event, possibly. all the ingredients coming together. yesterday 14 reports of tornadoes and baseball-size hail, as you reported, poppy. i showed you where the tornadoes were reported yesterday. nebraska and kansas predominantly. right now no warnings but that certainly will change. the biggest threat tonight. and you see a line of storms and a few severe thunders

. >> and i'm poppy harlow. thank you for starting your saturday with us. >> it is 8:00 on the east coast. we'll start with the collision between two commuter trains in connecticut. people were tossed over seats. one man says immediately the lights went out in his car as the two trains slammed into each other. now it's time for investigators to get a closer look. cnn national correspondent susan candiotti joins me on the phone. we just had a conversation with the chairman of the national transportation safety board. she said there was one representative who left d.c. last night, more are on their way there now. what can you add for us, susan? >> reporter: of course the key question as i'm sure she indicated, how did it happen? you have the two commuter trains carrying about 250 people in all, one heading to new york city, one the opposite direction. the northbound train derails plowing near the southbound train. it's unclear how fast the trains were going but as you could imagine passengers were terrified. >> al

i'm poppy harlow. now to five stories we're watching for you this morning. go team of federal investigators looking into the rush hour commuter train collision in connecticut. it happened last night and they're looking for clues as to what caused one of the trains to jump off the tracks and hit one coming just the other way. as many as 70 people were injured, three remaining in critical condition this morning. >>> number two, the cleanup in north texas. residents waiting in line now to get permits that will allow them back into their homes after as many as 16 tornadoes tore through the area, devastating entire neighborhoods. six people were killed. >>> thirdly, we're following a story overseas. according to south korea's news agency, north korea launched three short range guided missiles today. south korea's ministry of defense said all three ended up in the sea off of korea's peninsula to the east. the ministry also said the country has been beefing up its monitoring of north korea and maintains a high level of readiness. >>> the fourth story we're followin

i'm poppy harlow. it is half past the hour. 6:30 a.m.he east coast, and here's what we're following. floodwaters starting to go down. that is good news in san antonio, texas this morning but heavy rains caused very severe flooding yesterday. two women were killed when they were swept away by the rushing water. emergency workers rescued more than 200 people from flooded homes and a lot of stranded cars. it was a bittersweet day of celebration, west moore, south moore and moore all held back-to-back graduation ceremonies. all three tornadoes are in the devastating town of moore, oklahoma. despite the tragedy of last week, student were optimistic about the future. >> i'll remember it by the happiness that all my relatives are here. it is graduation, yeah, and a lot of sadness and loss from the tornado, but also other happiness that we get to kind of start over and rebuild. it's nice to be able to just begin again, and even though, yes, it's gone, it's a new chance. >> i know a lot of kids lost family members. i mean i know tons of people th

poppy harlow has the rest. >> authorities say it was a bullet fired from a police officer's gun that to the death of hofstra university student andrea ribello. >> let me start off by giving my most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the parents and sister of andrea. >> it happened friday morning in a home invasion robbery at the off campus house the 21-year-old shared with her twin sister and two others. police went there after a 911 call from someone claiming the gunman ordered them out of the house to get cash from an atm. when police arrived, they said the suspect was holding a gun to andrea's head. >> he fired eight rounds in total. seven of the rounds struck our subject, one of those rounds struck the victim. >> police say andrea was shot in the head and died. also killed was the suspect, identified by police at 30-year-old dalton smith who they said had an extensive rap sheet and was wanting for jumping patrol. rhee ozwas a jut straw and the news of her death was extremely hard for those who knew her. >> she was really popular. everyone loved her, she was sweet. >> what an al

poppy harlow, thank you very much. d as you can see, the balloons and the celebration at the dejesus house behind where poppy is, where the celebration of the whole community's been involved in it today. and of course gina is one of the three women here. here's what we know about the other two women. and obviously, there's still a lot to be filled in here. but amanda berry went missing on april 21st, 2003, the day before she turned 17. she reportedly accepted a ride home from a man from burger king, and this is what happened. she's now 27. her family last heard from her that night. berry's mom died in 2006, some say of a broken heart from missing her daughter as she searched for amanda. police say it was amanda berry's cries for help yesterday and this 911 call that set into motion this entire rescue. >> 911. >> help me. i'm amanda berry. >> you need police, fire, or ambulance? >> i need police. >> okay. and what's going on there? >> i've been kidnapped and i've been missing for ten years. and i'm here. i'm free now. >>

i'm poppy harlow. it is 8:00 this memorial day sunday.nks so much for starting your morning with us. well, san antonio, texas, drying out this morning after being washed over by flash floods. i talked with san antonio's mayor last hour. he says pockets of the city were under water yesterday causing major property damage. at least two people were killed in the flooding when they were swept away by the rushing waters. one of them was actually washed out of the arms of a rescue worker who was trying to get her out of her car. we know that more than 200 people were successfully rescued from submerged cars and flooded homes there. mayor julian castro said at least san antonio got a break last night with very little rain. and karen maginnis has been following this very closely. good morning to you, karen. how are things looking there now? >> we are expecting a round of rainfall. but let me qualify this. and that is we're watching this cluster of showers and a few thunderstorms making its way along interstate 10. it is been holding together fair

poppy harlow is working the story with me. speaking with some of the family members who have been talking to her about how they feel now, spending time with the freed women. so, poppy, i can't imagine, it must be just so overwhelming, with emotions seeing these people, i know you talked to the family of gina dejesus, how are they? what are they telling you? >> reporter: hi, brooke. we did. we had a chance to speak with the brother of gina dejesus, she is 23 years old now. her older brother ricardo is 33. we talked to him at the house behind me, the family home where gina lived before she was abducted. it is where her brother still lives and where he lived with her and her parents and he told me he found out that they had found his sister last night from watching the news. he was in his living room, watching the news. he thought -- he called his father, who, of course, is gina's father down to see it. and i said what was that like? he said, it was unbelievable, we were so excited, we were so happy, and, of course, after that, th
