the port now has about 86 acres of open space which is 10% of port property. plans call for increasing this amount by 28 acres or 30% within the next eight years. providing open space at or over the water is expensive like you just heard. many projects include pile supports over the water and repair to the sea wall and public spaces are being built for rising tidal conditions as i described earlier. the ability of the port to build this space is dependent on public support and through bonds and capital and to a limited extent grant funding. in the past 13 years the port has spent $109 million on public spaces. the port has been able to do this due to the support of san francisco voters through the approval of two general obligation bond measures. in 2008 for $33 million and in 2011 -- excuse me -- 2012 for $35 million. in addition to these bonds since 2000 the port has committed about $41 million of public funds which include revenues and grants. the port has also assuming the maintenance and liability responsibility of many of these new open spaces. to hold c

i just want to also thank the port fiduciary everything they did. john davey's staff did a wonderful job of lining people up. having people going to four different locations on four routes at one gate is pretty phenomenal and we were carrying -- as nina said the number of people that went to oakland and from blood gold is the bay monarch and holds 780 people so we would load them up going to oakland and then the golden gate boat could load 400 and we would clear out the dock but then you would turn around 10 minutes later and it was filling up again, so it was pretty incredible. as i said i am caroline and the president of blood gold fleet and we're a contractor for the emergency water transportation authority and we operate, maintain and crew the vessels for the four routes they operate in the bay area and it was great to see everyone work together, our staff, the port staff as well as other staff. our administrative staff as well as our union crews and ticketing people worked long hours and some on their days off willingly to make sure we were suc

[ applause ] >> thank you. >> okay, so raise your hands, how many of you would like to be me today? i am so humble and honored, what a great fortune to land my term right on the 150th year because the one thing that i will tell you about being 150 years old if you realize that your time is really short and insignificant, and if i were to dare to count how many port directors there have been before and how many there will be after it will become more of a second time, but, i get to be here with all of you and so many of you who have been here at this water front for decades, all of you from fisherman's wharf thank you for coming today, because of you it is our water front that has evolved ahead of everywhere else in the world this is a perfect place to celebrate. because here we have a litt

rule which prevented redevelopment of the historic ports and sheds. with adoption of these projects projects as piers one and one and a half to five and the exploratorium were able to move forward and with that plan the port agreed to construct two public spaces along the waterfront, the plaza which is the new public space which will begin construction in november in front of the cruise terminal at pier 27 and the brannan street wharf and describes the projects in detail by sizes and uses and the port agreed to construct these spaces in a 20 year period. the port began working with bcdc staff and a 23 member citizen advisory committee and had workshops and meetings and concepts reviewed at the board and advisory committee three times concluding with the concept design on december 9, 2002 with the port commission approval on august 12, 2003. then in 2009 concept design was reviewed at meetings and the commission. brannan wharf is a new wharf parallel to the embarcadero promenade shown on the screen. at the end and extending for up to 800 feet and up to

rob semp er all here today on this momentus occasion, thank you everyone, our port commissioners here as well are here too. and i want to just make sure that everybody remembers that it was in 2006, that lieutenant governor made a promise made a promise that san francisco would rebuild a world class state of the art facility, that would expand our capacity to educate, and to inspire the curiosity of children, young and old from all around the world. and today, we are delivering on that promise. as we celebrate the reopening of our exporatorium, one of our city's treasured education and cultural institutions for over 40 years. where else in the world would you have our children and our families experience over 1,000 interactive exhibits that explore, biology, physics, listening, cognitive, perception and social behavior and the environment. right here in san francisco. and it just does not happen in every city, but it will happen here. not only in san francisco, but for the families around the world. and the exporatorium does so much more for our san francisco communities. it offers ou

i have the honor of the port commissioners and staff to welcome you back to the san francisco port. and this historic pier 48. pier 48 as you may know was one of the last piers built right before world war ii. it was built in concert with pier 45 and fisherman's wharf in the changes of technology in cargo movement. those changes were stimulated by the fact that we had two bridges opening up here in the bay. and our opportunities to move cargo changed by vessel and rail to also by truck. pier 48 as you can see is much like all the other piers you are familiar with. it has a great large and long apron for cargo to be shipped and stored and out into distribution. the difference of pier 48 than others you know. on this side is a second transit shed with another apron. in the middle is a long divide. that's where the rail cars and the trucks came in to pick up the cargo. across the way is seawall lot 337. that was filled in by the santa fe railway. in order to create a new headquarters for their train movement. that would go down the peninsula and out into the greater california area. an

the port is making large strides up and down the bay. we are happy to have the port planner dan to come up and say a few words. [ applause ] >> thank you. it's all about the fishing industry. fisherman's wharf is here because this industry has thrived for a hundred years and people want to see and understand it. every improvement the port commission has directed in fisherman's wharf have met the needs of the industry. whether it's dealing with the earthquake or the harbor or adding a police boat or new harbor master's office or hoist, it's about the fishing industry.

i also wanted to mention the work the port has done with the planning department and other agencies on design and access issues on the waterfront. as you know -- as diane mentioned it has the water element and i know there are other presentations happening on that as well. my view -- excuse me, my view is that the blue green way is one of the most important elements of that because it creates a continuous multi-mile access system through the entire waterfront through mission bay to hunter's point and extends the trail through the city and it's a way of combining us to and connecting us to the larger region. other realms include jefferson staff and the first phase was unveiled. we are very proud of that and it's a model to do the work in other parts of the city and just to let you know we have an entire team devoted to this type of work. it's the city design team within the planning department. they're focus focused on improvements to the public realm and this grew out of that and our streets represent 25% of the land area of the city and more than the parks combined, so the basic coal
