of celebration of our port. and what a way to celebrate with all these wonderful things that are happening here. it's taken 15 years for this project to get done, 15 years. that's a 10th of the history of the port of san francisco. and there's a lot of people to thank and monique's already thanked them, but it's worth repeating. i think the big conservation development commission, the port commission, our port staff, public works, all our departments behind me, rec and park, our federal partners have certainly been extremely important. thank you to everyone for getting to this point. and thank you for the contractors as well, because this has been one of the most visible projects where people along the waterfront have traversed this project for quite sometime and did not experience any public safety challenges along the way. so, i want to thank them for that high level of safety. 840 feet alongside our embarcadaro promenade, really blessed to have two beautiful acres of open space to welcome more people to enjoy

i just want to also thank the port fiduciary everything they did. john davey's staff did a wonderful job of lining people up. having people going to four different locations on four routes at one gate is pretty phenomenal and we were carrying -- as nina said the number of people that went to oakland and from blood gold is the bay monarch and holds 780 people so we would load them up going to oakland and then the golden gate boat could load 400 and we would clear out the dock but then you would turn around 10 minutes later and it was filling up again, so it was pretty incredible. as i said i am caroline and the president of blood gold fleet and we're a contractor for the emergency water transportation authority and we operate, maintain and crew the vessels for the four routes they operate in the bay area and it was great to see everyone work together, our staff, the port staff as well as other staff. our administrative staff as well as our union crews and ticketing people worked long hours and some on their days off willingly to make sure we were suc

i have the honor of the port commissioners and staff to welcome you back to the san francisco port. and this historic pier 48. pier 48 as you may know was one of the last piers built right before world war ii. it was built in concert with pier 45 and fisherman's wharf in the changes of technology in cargo movement. those changes were stimulated by the fact that we had two bridges opening up here in the bay. and our opportunities to move cargo changed by vessel and rail to also by truck. pier 48 as you can see is much like all the other piers you are familiar with. it has a great large and long apron for cargo to be shipped and stored and out into distribution. the difference of pier 48 than others you know. on this side is a second transit shed with another apron. in the middle is a long divide. that's where the rail cars and the trucks came in to pick up the cargo. across the way is seawall lot 337. that was filled in by the santa fe railway. in order to create a new headquarters for their train movement. that would go down the peninsula and out into the greater california area. an

i also wanted to mention the work the port has done with the planning department and other agencies on design and access issues on the waterfront. as you know -- as diane mentioned it has the water element and i know there are other presentations happening on that as well. my view -- excuse me, my view is that the blue green way is one of the most important elements of that because it creates a continuous multi-mile access system through the entire waterfront through mission bay to hunter's point and extends the trail through the city and it's a way of combining us to and connecting us to the larger region. other realms include jefferson staff and the first phase was unveiled. we are very proud of that and it's a model to do the work in other parts of the city and just to let you know we have an entire team devoted to this type of work. it's the city design team within the planning department. they're focus focused on improvements to the public realm and this grew out of that and our streets represent 25% of the land area of the city and more than the parks combined, so the basic coal
