plenty of questions as port talbot reaches a new future. will workers switch to the new scheme? joining me now from nottingham is pensions expert, john ralfe. is this the most sensible the options available? yes, it is. the idea of setting up a new pension scheme is a bit of a distraction. it's important to be clear that had this not happened the company was going to go bust. they had to persuade the pension regulator that was going to happen within 12 months. it's not an easy option for the company. the company also had to write a big cheque of £550 million. the idea the company is walking away is not right. the effect on the pensions protection fund is also positive out of this? it's a positive out of this? it's a positive because the pension protection fund is there to provide compensation for exactly these sorts of circumstances. people will get a bit less, and it is only a bit less, they are down maybe ten or 15%. i was a sceptic of the pension protection fund when it was setup in 2004 but i actually think it has done a very good job. the only issue is that a £50 billion sc
