a fire is burning in the west portal area. at 9 west portal ave. it is a commercial building at that address. it broke out just after 5:00 a.m. this morning. fire crews are there and we have a crew headed out. we will give you details from the scene. >> will trget it under control.s house is now completely destroyed. the firefighters are securing the scene to allow investigators to come back later and find out the cause. here is video from for 3:00 p.m.. 20 minutes into the fire and he slams for coming from the back of the house, the side of just about all the sections of the home. a middle-age couple lived at the house. they were woken by the flames in the kitchen area. they manage to get out but they did suffer some injuries. the man h inj6managed the neighbors sprayed the bush is down so they could not catch on fire. with that action as was the quick action from the fire department they managed to contain the fire only to this place. there were no fatalities however there were a few pets inside that died from the fire. there was live ammunition

this is on the main drag here of west portal. right across the street from the west portal muni station. so the service we're not sure exactly if it's going to be cut off. we have noticed a couple of the lines going through. but we understand that traffic could definitely be impacted at least for the next 30 minutes or so. now when we first arrived there was a heavy amount of smoke coming from that awning right above the squat and gobble. you can still see they have their hoses and water being sprayed on it. it looks like they have the situation under control now. they are actually going in next door. there is a business located next door where the fire crews are gaining access. they are probably going to be breaking down some wall there is to let the fire breathe. you can see there is smoke coming from the windows of that building that is located next door to the squat and gobble. this is a very popular restaurant here in west portal. and we do not know exactly what caused the fire. we understand it could be due to a flue fire.

so this is san francisco's west portal neighborhood.s been upgraded now it a three-alarm response. so there are a lot of news crews on scene and fire crews, as well. we just learned it's the squat and gobble reporter. flames are seen shooting from the roof. that's the address right there 9 west portal avenue. the closest cross street is uloa. west portal is shut down in the area. fortunately we are not hearing about any injuries. what is being impacted is muni possibly because it's right there by the west portal tunnel so inbounded and outbound service you could see delays. if there are delays it would impact the l line and k line across that stretch. so again we are sending our own crew to the scene. we'll let you know as soon as we get more information and live pictures. in the meantime we are following a major accident sounds like on freeways there in oakland. southbound 880 approaching 23rd. they just issued a traffic alert within the last few minutes. so you can see our speed sensors are slow across that stretch jammed solid to at

as of today, one west portal is underway and we're expecting the order of 9 to 15 west portal, which we got an update they had a meeting about that today, they have submitted a private engineer's report that documents the building is repairable and thus may not need demolition but we will give an update on that. as we did during the earlier ocean avenue tragedy, dbi is working closely with the property owners, businesses and the mayor's offices and other city departments to expedite recovery from the west portal fire and i know a lot of the staff members had to spend some extra hours over the weekend to make sure that things were going well. we appreciate that. i went by and saw deputy director sweeney hanging out to see if he could help. it plays well with our community that you are out there and talking during these difficult times. the director and deputy director, ed sweeney and also i was at this meeting, there were a few names here, met with supervisor jane (inaudible) on monday to discuss legislation that she is considering that amends supervisor david chiu's vacant building o

an early-morning fire ripped through the "squat & gobble" restaurant in the west portal neighborhood. ken bastida has more where the mayor just took a tour. >> reporter: he showed up this afternoon. here's some of the damage. this is the wine bar that's next door to the "squat & gobble." and you can see there is still water coming from the second floor and also the west portal medical dental building that shares this corner building, as well. the second floor has just about been destroyed. in fact they told us this afternoon no one is allowed up there because it' unsafe. i talked to chief hayes and they believe the fire may have started in the basement of the wine bar and spread to the restaurant. the mayor was here this afternoon. i asked him what can he do it help these businesses? >> we have learned how to respond quickly and better because they are small businesses. i'm not just talking talk. we believe this. we'll get a good response to everybody and make sure they are informed adequately and help them out the best we can. >> reporter: yeah. people from the neighborhood have been

we're by the west portal tunnel.l spraying water on what is now a four-alarm fire. you can see them spraying water an there is a big cloud of smoke. now, within the last 15 minutes, what the fire chief told me is that they upgraded this to a four alarm to a three alarm. it's at the squat & gobble restaurant. what the fire chief told me is that this is a deep seated fire and it looks like it may have started somewhere in the rear near the kitchen area and it spread to an adjacent wine bar, the next building over. she said that it has significant damage, both of them. now, firefighters backed out because they say it got so dangerous that the squat & gobble has actually partially collapsed. here's what the fire chief saw when she got here. >> when i first got on scene there was heavy flames blowing through the roof of the squat & gobble. so what we're doing is obviously working and we have our arson team on scene. they're standing by waiting to get the green light to go in an determine cause and origin. >> reporter: now

the squat and gobble restaurant in the west portal neighborhood caught fire this morning. firefighters say it spread to a wine shop and dental office. crews brought in so much heavy equipment that muni trains could not pass through the west portal station for five hours. bus bridges were set up to get around the tunnel. three firefighters were hurt including one who suffered smoke inhalation. >>> live ammunition made fighting a house fire a little more challenging for a san jose firefighter this morning. the fire started just before 4:00 at a home on carlton avenue. that's near good sam hospital. the intense heat set off the bullets causing them to explode. the couple that was inside the home was able to escape but are being treated for burns. investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire but the couple believes it started in the kitchen. >> was the unemployment rate under represented? tonight the state employment development department is denying reports it didn't fully or properly report the number of californians who filed for unemployment last week.
