the georgia ports authority and the port of saint john in the caribbean. so, we're very pleased by that distinction. we also were awarded an award of excellence for visual only presentation, and that related specifically to the banners and to the pylons. the award look pretty similar. but we're nonetheless very pleased by them. and that puts us in the running to be considered for one of the top three awards which will be given out at the annual convention later this fall. so, i want to again thank everyone that was a huge team effort at the port from the commission on down, to making our 150th celebration such a success. all of our tenants, our neighbors and our partners really contributed and we're pleased to have that recognized nationally in the form of these awards. and my thanks to rene martin and jerry and others for submitting the nomination and winning. so, kudos for that. >> also just a little side note. wasn't the artwork done internally by our very own staff? >> yes, it was, yea. though banners are in hot supply, lock them up -- hot demand, rath

i'm megan wallet from the port of san francisco i'm here to request support for the port for artwork for the $200,000 from the james art committee which is a 501 c 3 charitable organization. the item is in the lobby of the terminal on pier 27. the installation was designed by the collective identified by the help of auto desk from the tenant that is in the residency program. james r herman was an important figure in history and i would like to invite john farly from the international foreman union to give a brief background on mr. herman. >> good afternoon. i wanted to first quickly note that i come from jimmy's local. jimmy became president in 1964 by the local w 34. he became a true san francisco. minnie silver is part of the committee. an honorary member is democratic leader pelosi. jimmy hadden credible values. it was the propensity to reach out to individuals and raise up everybody. you noticed that with his cooperation and work with delancey stleet. he wanted to have a vision of the people in san francisco where everybody had equal access, where immigrants, people of color, etc

it generates welcome $3 million a year to the port. it has a wide range of tenants, everything from the san francisco water transit agency, to the blue and gold fleet, san francisco bar pilots, architectural resources, arg, and most recently auto desk, you know, fortune 500 company that we all know of, proud of, being a port tenant. they are currently investing upwards of $16 million into the pier for their applied sciences development center. you know how amazing that premise is. this past december the port commission agreed to an agreement with the auto desk to further expands their premises at pier 9 and this further expansion called for auto desk and san francisco bar palace to come to some agreement as to the gate and ingress at the end of pier 9. it became pretty clear as both parties started to look at the expansion that as envisioned, the expansion could cause some serious vehicular circulation issues. we've gone back and forth on solutions to this problem and the bar pilots and auto desk come to the port and come to a solution

ports are scrambling to keep up.e have our report. >> reporter: is the 6.8 billion and counting the panama canal expansion is an attempt to reshape global shipping routes. a century ago president teddy roosevelt was instrumental in opening the canal. a short cut between the atlantic and pacific ocean s. today it is too narrow, among them the ships used to move goods from asia to the united states. 18% is shipped through the canal. panama hopes to win more of that business with super sized lots. >> joe biden joined the panamanian president for a look at the work in progress. >> the arrival of the new ships presents an opportunity for countries to transport goods more cheaply than ever before. it's a challenge for all of us modernize. >>> khelleded to open in 2016. the new canal -- scheduled to open in 2016. it will be open to bigger ships, 25% longer and 50% wider than the ships using them today. they'll carry up to three times the count capacity of containers. >> there has been an arms race in the shipping industry.

the port that james r. herman and floating point collective have knee gauche yited gift agreement that provides the terms under which the port can accept this unconditional gift. this gift agreement will give the port the following authority -- full ownership of the tribute, and secondly the approval of the content and any content changes. this agreement also contains customary releases and waivers for the committees and artist rights to allow the port unrestricted use for the tribute. in order to accept this there is a process. it has an estimated value of 250,000. this includes the gift for installation and replacement parts for a 20 year period. this subject to acceptance under the board of supervisors under the city's administrative code. todz i am seeking the commission's acknowledge of this gift and approval of the gift agreement that is attached to the staff report. with the commissions acknowledge of this tribute gift, it can be presented to the board of supervisors. so the next steps are presenting

prer vation of port's real estate portfolio is crucial to the survival of the port. critical infrastructure such as bart, muni, s.f.p.u.c., and department of public works assets are located within our jurisdiction and may be vulnerable. who is paying attention? this group called s.f. adapt and the sea level rise committee in particular that consists of representatives of 7 city departments as well as two consultant teams, and we have developed a strategy which is included in this guidance. we have collaborated to develop a how-to guide to incorporate sea level rise into capital planning and project design. why the guidelines? well, interdepartmental collaboration is essential for prioritizing risk and developing adaptation measures. use of consistent signs, assumptions and methods across departments will facilitate project funding and implementation. initially the guidelines were requested to be prepared for the capital planning committee. however, they ultimately may have application city-wide. how will we develop these guidelines? we did extensive research on guide

soon after the fire, port staff basically -- not port staff, but port rebuilt the bulkhead building, completeding repairs in time for the 34th america's cup events. during the events, the bulkhead building was used by america's cup in support of america's cup events at the site. more specifically, a fairly large portion of the bulkhead building was occupied by the waihiki island yacht club restaurant which is basically a pop-up style restaurant meant only to be used for the event t. was actually up only for about six months. and when the restaurant was removed, the bulkhead building has now subsequently been used on an interim basis for basically supporting the phase two of the cruise terminal project. now that san francisco is no longer being considered for a host for the 35th america's cup, port staff believes that it is appropriate time to share some of our ideas with the port commission and the public and to retain and get feedback from you. real estate staff believe the pier 29 bulkhead building represents a valuable leasing opportunity. since it was recently renovated because o

norfolk already has a port that can accommodate these super ships. >> yeah, there's quite a few portse east coast that we expect to be open when the canal opens up, now due in 2016. we have got new york, norfolk, miami, with their new investments, and then baltimore as well. savanna just got awarded federal grant money. from then jacksonville and boston also have the chance to see wins. miami has had great support for the state. you mentioned about the canal opening. and some intermodal enhancement, so on the dock side to smooth traffic getting out of not just the community but potentially to connect miami better to the rest of the country. but along the gulf coast, so soybean producers may now be shipping more of their goods south, and feeding into those asian appetites. so instead of being imported. this is an opportunity for american exports. >> and you mentioned intermodal that's where a container comes off of a ship and becomes a trucking or rail car. let's talk about that. obviously how will people compensate for that? will we see rail prices becoming cheaper? if >> yeah, there'

ports. is there any downside to this?the american consumer and businesses, there's really only upside. any additional goods that could reduce transportation costs means cheaper agriculture, electronics, and maybe most importantly, cheaper import products for our businesses. so from that side, it's a big win. the real question is, between these ports is it a zero sum gain. how much will be different because of the canal itself, versus trade lines in general that may be flat lining or growing at a slower rate. >> right. i mean this is great business for the panama canal, it is a remarkable savings in some cases for ships. we look at the northwest passage through the arctic, anything that can be done to get a ship to port faster has some net effect on the consumer, but you are only going to see the big uptick if we see an increase in global trade. >> exactly. it's how much the u.s. can network with the world. we have seen global trade glowing faster than global gdp. hat's a great sign and a smart investment for the panamains

let's talk about deepening the port. if you never were out there lobbying and pushing, which is what the port authority was supposed to be doing. the reason why was you were making money off of your appointment rather than trying to get the port deepen. >> this is the debate between the republican candidates for united states senate and will now go to our third and final round. in this round each of our panelists will ask a question to the candidate of his or her choice. i will determine whether a rebuttal is appropriate. you get the first question. >> you talked earlier about your efforts to -- the importance of trying to get the economy to grow. first i was wondering where he do you stand on an internet sales tax? could you clarify not you wouldr or like to see taxes raised. >> thank you for pointing that out. that has argument cleared up by several outside agencies. all these people refuted the fact that i ever said -- here is what i said. i want to put a fat tax and because it will level the playing field for the res

coast ports would result in about a $2 billion loss to the u.s.. >> imports are not the soul issue. california's fruits and vegetables, for example, ship overseas from west coast ports. any delay would be rotting food and lost sales. and parp -- part of the problem, the frustration is there is a media blackout during these negotiations. there is a lot to lose for the ports and the union if everything comes to a stop. >> what is the betting on what is going on right now? obviously the pressure that would come to bare would involve the president and politicians. you would be hearing from everyone. it's a little quieter now which makes me think people are betting against the strike or are loanful for a resolution. >> yes, absolutely. and i think the economic conditions are different than back in 2002. the ports and unions traditionally don't get along, but they kind of have to get along now. the economic condition is poorer than it was in 2002. there is more competition. there is competition in canada and mexico. shippers can decide they can go to th

planning, and of course the port. let's step back for just a minute and think about the embarcadaro. you probably all know it intimately. this street has become one of the most iconic streets in san francisco. it attracts visitors and local alike to world class attractions in an unrivaled physical setting. you know it intimately. think about it for a moment and think what you love about the embarcadaro. my guess is it relates to an experience you had there. i think we're so close to it we forget this is the backdrop for some of life's most important moments. it carries enormous weight in the psyche of the city of san francisco, and i can't emphasize that enough as we move forward with this project and propose to make changes to it. along with being one of the most iconic streets in san francisco, the embarcadaro is really a heavy duty mover of people and goods. it carries transit, motor vehicleses, bicycles, pedi cabs, walkers, skooters, roller bladers all with a view of the bay. so many people want to use the embarca

in the sports -- in these ports. martin can tell you. governor haley can tell you. the state of georgia can tell you. port of savannah, it accommodates 278,000 jobs in that state. i forget the number in maryland, but it's gigantic. and yet we are diddling. you are doing all you can. you are attracting investments. the federal government is sitting on its hands because they can't get the so-called worker fell through and they finally got to overtime to figure out how to allocate those funds. i walked with governor quinn along the mississippi river, talking about the critical connection between rail lines, highways and waterways. and i sat with governor cuomo in albany as you laid out a remarkable upgrade in new york's power grid, bridges, tunnels that are being rebuilt in the wake of say in the. but being rebuilt to a higher standard, not being rebuilt to the status quo, to a higher standard. going beyond fundamentally rethink and reinvent the states infrastructure in the 21st century. one of the primary responsibilit
