it is business as usual here in downtown portland.ng is the crews stayed ahead of the snow as it fell yesterday. they were plowing as the snow was falling. they were helped by the fact that a lot of drivers -- maine drivers stayed off the roads voluntarily. this is the one state in this region that did not have a mandatory driving ban. and when the public safety office spokesperson was asked why that was, he simply said "we're maine. we know to stay off the roads in a snowstorm." ands can see things are back to normal. >> i've been to portland. great restaurants and great breweries in portland as well. what are they saying in terms of some possible long-term effect on the lobster industry there. i know it is an odd question perhaps, but we know that is a huge industry there in portland maine. are they concerned at all that this last of cold will have residual effect on the most popular staple export? >> reporter: that is one question we haven't explored. but are you talking about the restaurants and the bars and the eateries in the ar

something similar, though, happened today in portland, maine, where the always fearless "portland presscided they were going to flip a one-finger first amendment salute to somebody else who was trying to shut down news coverage of something that people have a right to know about. in portland, it concerns the case of a prominent local attorney who was facing multiple felony charges stemming from a domestic violence case. the court proceedings were not that remarkable. the man sbld a plea in conjunction with one of the charges which resulted in some of the other charges being dismissed. but here's the thing. here's why this is now. >> big story. the guy who was on trial somehow convinced the judge in his case that his court case should be treated as a secret. he somehow persuaded the judge to direct members of the media who were covering the story that they would not be allowed to report on what was happening at the trial. this is from the "press herald." the judge told members of the media as the hearing began what they could and could not report. a reporter protested the order and asked

they got some 16 to 18 inches of snowfall here in portland. it's not unusual for this city to get that much snow but again, in one storm system it is a lot for them to deal with. we've seen snowplows going up and down the street doing their best to clear the roads. and then jordan can we look down the street there? i want you to see where the snowplow is. you see also the blowing snow? we've seen a lot of that. the winds have been very intense out here to the point where it could lead to whiteout conditions for a lot of the people you know if they were to venture out onto the roadways. again, most people are staying home. they were advised to stay off the streets. and now it's a matter of waiting for all of the snow guys to melt and go away. that could take several weeks for business to get back to normal here in portland. john christine? >> that's the scene in maine. what about connecticut? a big part of it just got hammered by the blizzard. take a look at the coastal areas. the storm dumped up to 30 inches of snow in some towns and cities. t

blizzard warnings are up from atlantic city, new jersey, to portland, maine. 52 million people are in the path of this nor'easter. forecasts are calling for as much as three feet of snow. state and local governments have begun closing roads and shutting down public transportation. we have team of correspondents covering the blizzard of 2015. first we'll go to don dahler in new york where the entire subway system is about to close. don? >> . >> reporter: yeah, scott, the last time new york city saw snowfall like what's being predicted for tonight was february 2006, 26.9 inches fell and virtually shut down the city. the mayor warns that tonight's storm might be even worse. want to check in with john yang from portland maine. as we can see there, the conditions look worse than what we saw with chris' shot. >> reporter: that's right, thomas. it is really picking up here. we're in the building phase here, the snow is coming down much heavier than it has been in the past couple of hours. the winds are picking up. there is not much snow on the ground. less than half an inch. officially a tenth of an inch has fallen since midnight. i can tell you, there is a time and temperature sign that is over the street. it is elevated over the street. it is about two blocks behind me. when we came out here about three hours ago, i was able to see it clearly and we're watching the temperatures drop. but within the past hour, the snow has started coming down so heavily that i can't see it anymore. it is totally obscured by the snow falling. the forecasters here the meteorologists at our nbc affiliate wcsh here tell us they expect during the daylight hours the snow to be intense and the winds to be strong all day long. they s

. >> cnn's george howell is in portland, maine.e he is. >> reporter: so i want to show you the situation here in portland maine. when you look around, you can see snowplows are doing the best that they can do to clear the streets. but look at these snow berms. in some cases, it's up to my waist. a lot of snow fell in just a short amount of time. some 16 to 18 inches fell and they picked up another 6 to 7 inches overnight. so a lot of snow to deal with. and then also the winds. the winds have been intense. you can see from time to time these winds just blowing through the snow blows, as well. it's created whiteout conditions but here's the thing, officials did ask folks to stay at home to stay off the roads so crews could do their work. in many cases the roads have been very clear so that the crews can clear these streets. now it's a matter of waiting to see when all of the snow melts. that could take a couple of weeks before business gets back to normal here in portland. george howell cnn, portland maine. >>> a former russian spy m
