after 7:00, 8:00, i can testify the garage at portsmouth square is empty. automobiles going to the restaurant -- there is no problem. i am sure the restaurant will delegate. they do not have to pay the parking fee. there are lots of seniors in chinatown. they live in a very congested place. there are entertainments, and within reasonable prices, i am sure the senior will go there once a week. i hope you will grant the permit. i am also a member of the central station, the police captain's advisory board. we had so much trouble on broadway, but this is a quiet, peaceful street. we want more people walking the street, going into restaurant to get entertained. our number one industry is tourists. this also will attract tourists. not only that -- we have roughly 300 tourists from china and hong kong every day, coming to san francisco. when two guys from china heard about it, dick came and brought customers. -- they came and brought customers. jobs and jobs. everybody needs a job. president newlin: you said you have been there forever. >> chinatown. president ne

that is called portsmouth square but that is where they all gathered, and that is where a lot of people will gather, too, if there is a major earthquake in chinatown. you must go to golden gate park, showed the policeman. the city is on fire. go quickly now. dark smoke hurt our eyes. dust filled the air, our mouths and noses, too. this is where the policeman from way back then told them there was a fire, so they had to go to golden gate park to get away from the fire. the earth shook again. remember what i said? after an earthquake, it is not just once. the earth shook again. we stopped and watched in fear as buildings crumbled around us. pretty scared, huh? older brother, younger brother, and i cleared the path of the cart with our grandparents and our belongings. they did not have cars in those days. the had to have carts to carry people out. they cannot get out fast enough. we were hot and thirsty, so we shed the extra clothing and drank some cold tea. in the early morning rush to leave, we had not eaten anything. grandmother give us crackers and dried fruit. see that. up the steep h

if this subject was going to go as far as portsmouth square, it would be good enough, but i do not think that in our children's lifetime we will see a subject in to fisherman's wharf. that we will see this line extended into lombard and van ness. that should be the 30-year vision, not fighting over whether we will complete phase two of a previously approved -- and as you heard the testimony of years and years of public meetings here at commissions and a citizens group supporting this project. this is serving the fastest- growing part of san francisco -- districts 6 and 10. in the last census, that part of san francisco added -- pardon me, all of san but cisco added about 30,000 residents. virtually all of that population growth was in this corridor. make no mistake -- this does serve downtown. thousands of people from that corridor worked at union square in hotels, restaurants, retail, walk three blocks down to montgomery street. finally, even the eastern -- or northern ends of the financial district. it is a seven-block walk from the transamerica pyramid to muni metro. when the line is

last month i was in portsmouth, at the second-chance counseling center.it received critical federal resources. not a lot of dollars but critical dollars for a job retraining program for those recovering from abuse. the center is about second chances, combatting the epidemic with a focus on recovery and rehabilitation helping ohioans with the resources they need to be the productive statistics they want to be. this past july i was at the amthyst family treatment center in columbus. we talked about the administration's comprehensive prescription drug strategy in ways that f.d.a. can crack down on abuse. the staff at the residents like health protpelgss and community activists described the stories of victims and families they represent. i met with many of those people who are going through these programs and are getting their lives back in order. prescription drug abuse and crime is nonpartisan. it's clear it's an issue of life and death in too many parts of our nation and especially in my state. mr. president, i'd like to share three brief letters describi
