the press to supply them for free in the morning can't be good . i'm interested always in the waters about how. i sit. in a world of big partisan movies a lot and conspiracy it's time to wake up to the smoke is so thick it's showing up on our visibility layer. three in oakland and hayward. san carlos, flight arrival delays because the visibility was so low and two in concord. san jose at six and slightly better air quality than the south bay. poor air quality will take over your neighborhoods. it will be mild. just make sure you're not out there too long. the unhealthy air i believe will be here through at least thursday. the wind starts to shift friday, come out of the west and push that smoke to the east away from us. we have to wait nearly nine days for that. let's talk about what's going on right now. we have upper 50s through the north way. even the 65 at clear lake. low to mid 60s in other neighborhoods, even 70s showing up already at half-moon bay. temperatures today will be in the upper 60s to low 70s from 67 in san mateo and 74 in santa rosa. fairfield and san jose and also freemont in the low 70s. what the smoke is actually doing is keeping the sun from maximizing this warming and that's why we're not quite as warm as we were last week. we're in the same pattern. it's just that sunshine is not as strong because of all this muck in the air. we're in the mid to upper 60s at noon. if you're heading out, now 4:00 still in the upper 60s everywhere. once that sunsets, we'll cool off quickly, low to mid 50s today. high clouds tonight. we won't be quite as cool as we were this morning. there's a lot of frost in the north bay and east the bay with san francisco 48 the warm spot. let's jump ahead because we desperately need something new in the weather. this latest model was is not as robust as it was this morning for the same time. tuesday into wednesday, one storm comes through bringing us the chance of healthy much-needed rain. do you see where it turned th peak white in the mountains. here is my accuweather seven-day forecast. expect temperatures to stay the course. look at that, mid 60s at the coast. low to mid 70s elsewhere until that pattern changes sunday. >> so weird to be stuck in this pattern for so long, mike. >> it's been dry for so long and now we have the smoke and five days. >> weird and devastating. thanks, mike. >>> people who use lyft on a regular basis are about to get rewarded. the ride hailing company will unveil its first ever lyft rewards loyalty program. every time you use the lyftlyfty points. you can earn discounts and upgraded rides. >>> lime is pulling scooters off city streets. according to "the washington post," lime is investigating faulty scooters made by the chinese manufacturer okay. lime would not say how many okay scooters are in the u.s. the recalled scooters are being replaced with newer, safety scooters. other scootes were recalled last month because of a fire risk. >>> abc's new brand localish is sharing inspiring stories in a weekly digital series called more in common. this week, see how a kitchen became the recipe for success for a former criminal. you can watch more in common on facebook watch and see new episodes every week. >>> toy story fans, don't move because we have a treat for you right after this break. a sneak peek at the trailer for the movie's fourth installment and the new character you can expect to see. and you find a deal on cookware that makes you say. you know when you're at ross yes! ...oh, yeah! bring on the holidays! that's yes for less. everything you need to prep, cook and serve up the season. it feels even better when you find it for less-at ross. yes fo

"post" publisher and ceo fred ryan put out a statement saying, "president trump's response to the brutal murder of journalist jamal khashoggi is a betrayal of long-established american values and respect for human rights and the expectation of trust and honesty in our strategic relationships. he is placing personal relationships and commercial interests above american interests in his desire to continue to do business as usual with the crown prince of saudi arab arabia president trump is correct in saying the world is a very dangerous place. his surrender to this state-ordered murder will only make it more so. an innocent man brutally slain deserves better as does the cost of truth and justice and human rights." this feels like a moment in this presidency. >> it is you know, and that was a really strong statement from fred ryan, and this whole incident over the last few months has been, i think, a really important moment for american journalism and for journalists around the world to fight for free press and to ask questions and to demand answers that we're not getting necessarily from the white house. and it's a challenge, i think, for president trump to figure out how to deal with this. he's not only at odds with his own intelligence agencies, with this assessment, but he's at odds with people in his administration including his own vice president who for years championed the freedom of the press, not only in the united states, but abroad pence was in asia just last week and fought for the freedom of a couple of journalists there and then to see the boss doing this at home, it's just a complete 180 from what happened to the american values. >> how -- tell me how this -- so i was told by a former intelligence official that this kind of statement is a policy statement. it would not have gone out for interagency review how does a statement like this with eight exclamation points go out? >> well, i've never known john bolton to be a fan of explanation points. >> me, either. >> that statement was dictated if not completely at least in part by the president. >> by whom take me inside he rifted on what he believes, he dissed the intelligence community, said maybe they do, maybe they don't and someone just took it down like dictation and the press office puts it out >> i don't know who did the dictation and when you're putting that out a national security statement, there's a different press office that deals with that than sarah sanders and bill shine but i assume this was -- this is the president's view this is what he wanted to say and it's what went out under the white house letterhead. >> i just want to -- public service announcement, anyone who saw it before it went out is also probably going to end up before the house intel committee. >> and another thing -- >> because this is a statement where you would need to know if those individuals, maybe they were junior staffers without clearances if they were senior staffers with access to any intel, it's been in the newspaper now. your paper covered it. that the intel community assessment is that mbs ordered the killing of khashoggi. >> that's correct. >> anyone who knew that and put the statement out better get ready -- >> the statement went against that assessment. the other thing the president did in that statement is maligned jamal khashoggi he advanced baseless theories about him, conspiracies about him that have been pushed by the saudi government there's no evidence that he's a member of the muslim brotherhood, there's no evidence that he's enemy of the state as the president advanced in that statement. >> it's a great point. your colleague, robert costa, wrote a story about that about how the bizarre alignment of saudi arabia and conservative media was also advancing and advocating a whisper campaign. that also is a smear and a lie about cakhashoggi. is that also going to be of interest to noanyone with oversight responsibilities over the intelligence community, anyone that advanced those smears against khashoggi that called him an enemy of the state, i'm certain that is not the u.s. intelligence community's description of khashoggi. >> well, first of all, what's truly chilling about that is it's the same language that donald trump uses to describe the american journalists so he just described a journalist who was literally chopped into pieces in a third country as in the same way that he describes people who sit in the briefing room and ask him questions. i think the second point, nicolle, is what's really chilling also about that statement is, it kind of blends together the saudi narrative and the trump narrative. right? the saudi narrative has been this guy is a dangerous member of the muslim brotherhood. the trump narrative, we don't care what happened, let's move on it looks like it was coordinated. i think one of the things we have to look at was jared kushner cooking this up with mbs? how did this -- >> and were they -- if it didn't come from the intelligence community, how did they learn that the line on khashoggi was that he was an enemy -- where'd they hear that and i would -- whoever typed up this statement, i would like to know where that line came from and i'm guessing the house intel committee will, too. here's john brennan, our colleague and former cia director's, reaction he tweeted, "since mr. trump excels in dishonesty, it's up to members of congress to obtain and declassify the cia findings on jamal khashoggi's death no one in saudi arabia, most especially the crown prince, should escape accountability for such a heinous act." i heard this from two other former national security officials thats, you know, if you thought the questions around wmd and in the administration in which i worked, the questions about yellow cake, a line inserted in the president's state of the union address, if you thought questions aroundscaw how else to talk about them, were important, you thought congress dug in, this is just like those >> yeah. >> and congress will seek to declassify all of the intel around this incident and they will assemble a tick tock, little papers on a wall. they will learn all the facts. >> yeah. and they will ask these intelligence officials under oath, right? why would gina haspel or dan quotes want to lie, themselves, and put themselves at risk to serve a narrative that they -- >> they won't. >> -- didn't get to participate in, right? is they won't do it. as you said, i don't know where he thinks this is going. it shows he's truly going to dig in these next two years and test whether or not he can be subject to any accountability. he seems to only be getting worse with the knowledge that the democrats are about to have subpoena power, the democrats are about to control the house so it's setting up, we talked about the mueller investigation, there are going to be multiple constitutional crises where they're probably going to not try to turn over documents, they're going to try to withhold witnesses. it's going to be messy, but we have to stay focused on the core issue here, which is just the astonishing departure from american history and traditions. >> it's unbelievable. >> to have him literally acknowledging that this took place and saying he doesn't care about it, it is a chilling, chilling thing. >> it is i think the most stunning departure from everything that was before donald trump was president >>> after the break, she rubbed shoulders with world leaders, traveled around the world as part of her job on behalf of the president and her husband has a foreign policy portfolio all of his own. and now, news that she used her personal e-mail account while working in government. we know what happened to hillary clinton when that description applied to her what happens to ivanka trump now that she did the exact same thing? post-nationalism, post so i am absolutely convinced that ideas matter, more than anything else. , i am anespect idealist. i am afraid that there are no great ideas among current politicians. that is my pessimism and therefore i do not see some hopeful tomorrow's or days after tomorrow. want to comen: i back to break that down in several areas. s: let me put my american had on, i am a polish politician but the american -- but a u.s. citizen. that the u.s. government has to make sure that europe is safe. unsafe europe is trouble for the united states. , we have our neighbor seen this through history. in 1995 in bosnia, the united states had to step in. we have seen it obviously in the second world war. run the risk. the alliance between the united states and poland is very good. the alliance between the united states and the rest of europe is not that good. the relationship between poland and the rest of europe is not that good. need another ronald reagan. we need another john paul ii. we need another margaret thatcher. do not have the right players at the moment. we talked a lot about transatlantic alliance at the conference the other day. absolutely. at this moment, i have more faith in a transatlantic alliance than i do in a european alliance. all of the countries in europe are divided. until europe can work together, we cannot unite and this is very important. [applause] mr. o'sullivan: i would like to come back to all of those points quickly. we are talking about a lasting legacy. let's break it down into economics, religion, we are talking about the book as well .s reagan today, and politics let's talk about religion first in a way. no one on the panel here is a theologian. popee end of his life, the was the best -- depressed europe had not revived the belief in christianity in europe as he had hoped once communism was gone. in fact, one could argue eastern and central europe had been infected by the decrypted miss of the west rather than enjoying the prosperity. the first question i would like ,o put to all three of you is is the disappointment understandable and how should we respond to it? he felt christianity was decaying faster rather than it had before. maybe christianity had been stunted by the oppression of the communist system. how20's,d of the to we feel christianity is doing in europe after the great effort made for it at pope john paul ii. ms. anders: not great. i think in poland, religion kept poland going during the communist years. the fact that john paul ii came along, he was definitely instrumental in the solidarity movement. the church in poland is still pretty strong, not as strong as it used to be. go for the rest of europe and certainly does not go for the rest of the world. we havethe problem is seen christianity suffering all over the world now. nobody is coming particularly to the aid. if john paul ii were alive today, i think you would be more depressed today. mr. o'sullivan: it is fair to say that most european governments, not all, have not responded with enthusiasm to the cause of persecuted christians. they have wished it would go away. i think one of the most touching things i heard today was the story of the pope in zaire. i think that is one of the futures for the catholic church and christianity. rising --ere is a there is an explosion, and awakening, throughout all of africa. god, both in protestant, and evangelical pursuits and of roman catholic. i think the image in my mind is but the pope reaching out to the child in zaire and rocking it in his arms and loving it. that is ao me that, more likely image. problems here in america and also elsewhere. guysoks as though the bad are on the rise. history tells us that it is precisely at a critical time like this, a time of crisis that leadership arises, the people come together and i do not want to get into politics and give you specifics, but i can name charismatic, courageous politicians. clinical leaders who are under 40 who you will be hearing about in a very short period of time. mr. o'sullivan: do you have any comments on this? someone asas compared to our lady here who spent two thirds of his life in argueism, i would like to that fighting communism at least in our part was not done with lhe catholic church ideologica on our mind. whoof the aspects of people were opposing communism and wanted to bring it to an end, to expect the fall of communism would mean the renewal of christianity and of the devotion to the catholic church was a naive assumption. i think it is not worth discussing now. i am afraid that the catholic , the pope's created some problems as well. pope john paul ii was able to inspire all of us. , i amly true believers afraid the new pope is damaging all the credibility. this is very left, very progressivist, very liberal views for which he is defending all over the world. [applause] this is a blow to christianity and to the catholic religion. the people in central and eastern europe for not jumping on pope francis bandwagon. [applause] it is optimism one, realism two. jesus christ left s left andhind when he he was still with us, called the holy spirit. catholics believed that the holy spirit will be there and is guiding. it may very well be the outcome is not going to be one that we will like. we believe that there will be one that will in the end bring about a more christian and a more believing world. that has been the case. mr. klaus: that is true but i definitely have to blame the catholic church as well. i, as5 years ago, president of the country vetoed the new pill about the so-called registered partnership. silent.olic church was president, vetoed the bill and then i met the confederation of czech bishops and they thanked me. i said excuse me, i expected that you would be loud enough to protest against it. not waiting for my veto in the bill. it is always more complicated. i agree, the problem is the bishops and the bishops were the problem. the ships are the problem now. worst they act and the people will rise up and you may see a different kind of church in the years ahead. i think i'man: going to try to sum up the particular vision by saying there are times when the hand of providence is clearer than other times. thatcher, and john paul ii time was much clearer than it is today. anders: one remark the president said was that john paul ii was able to inspire everybody. there was an exhibition yesterday in the shrine that thanked john paul ii. i looked around and even though i know the story, i was fascinated. photographs of him with thousands of people. i did not live in the united states when ronald reagan was president so i do not know what kind of divisions you had. it seemed to me was the one thing they had in common was being able to work across aisles . certainly, you see john paul ii working with religious leaders from all over the world. you see ronald reagan working with leaders all over the world. problem, his is the this is the problem which exists in poland. from the fact that we need a leader who is charismatic, i think we need a leader who is able to work with everybody. [applause] have aullivan: we do not great deal of time left so it would like to hurry the debate along and bring in the question of economics which president klaus, you have great experience reviving and transforming the economy of czechoslovakia. at theask you this, moment, the record of growth of unemployment and generally of initiative in western europe in particular is rather weak. it does not seem to be doing to kimberly well and furthermore, you have the problems associated first with the 2008 crash and secondly with the euro. optimism of the first 10-15 years of the pope's cold war world or are the prospect of better for an economic future? anders: i feel very optimistic about poland. the gdp is going up. theon't have a problem with economy, we have a problem with the media and the message getting across. wethe last year or so, really are going forward. travel with other ministers and we have an awful lot going on in poland. i feel very optimistic. mr. o'sullivan: it is true that the bush record has been very good. mr. klaus: our dream was freedom, democracy, and market economy. that was not regarded now at least in the last decade or two double about decades. parliament, democracy, and not free markets in europe, and many respects, the european economy regulated as in late communism. already softm was and unable to be tough and function. in me, the economic system europe is very far from our dreams and dreamers as well. the free markets are not there. you mentioned the tragic mistake to introduce in europe, i wrote books about it. there is no time to develop those points. this is the reality in our part of the world. you mentioned the rate of unemployment growing. i must say that the czech republic has the lowest unemployment rate in europe these days. [applause] our almost crazy rate of , which isnt is 2.6% an unfound figure. there are differences among countries. poland is definitely very usingently and cleverly all of the european subsidies. [laughter] our ideas to not only privatize and deregulate, to be subsidized -- d subsidize. we did it. we eliminated all kinds of subsidies and to our great regret, subsidies are coming back through the european union. something we don't want and it creates lots of problems. i would like to turn to the question of democracy. this is a subject of great debate on both sides of the atlantic. i want to suggests that there seem to be two battles. , particularly france and germany, are critical of what is happening in poland and hungary and elsewhere, in which they allege that courts and the restricted media is controlled and democratic decisions come even though there might be elections, are not really free and fair. on the other hand, the critics euthe eu, they said if the tried to join come a would not be accepted because it did not meet the democratic criteria. and therefore, the charges against poland, hungary, and other countries fall by the wayside because they are not made by democratic institutions. let me go back to a conversation i had with senator mccain when the government changed. he and a number of other senators sent a letter to poland saying they were worried about democracy and the supreme court and so on and so forth. i spoke with him several months later and said, why would you say this? your are you getting information? dealingwe are still with the problem. you can read any newspaper you want in poland. they are not all friendly. we have two tabloids that regularly bash us. nobody writing in those papers ends up in jail. i was asked by a democratic senator that same visit, what about women's rights in poland and how many women? i cannot believe we get this bad press. there are several people continuously in the united states are bashing the polish government. we have several issues. we have a problem with migrants. we have a problem with the courts. we are told we are now controlling the courts. that was a long subject and i do not want to get into it. to accuse poland of being a nondemocratic country, we were under communist rule for so many years, we want to have our identity. let poland the poland. we do not want to be ruled by the eu. [applause] mr. edwards: what is so hard for me to figure out is people keep criticizing hungary and poland for these anti-democratic measures which they are eventually carrying out. and yet, the last time i looked at it, i believe the present government and hungary has been elected three times in a row i a -- by a twoajority thirds majority. i believe in the last several elections in poland, same way. so the people are voting dim -- democratically. isn't that democracy in action? we americans should not be so quick to criticize our friends and allies over there and let them go about their business as their people seem to want to do. mr. o'sullivan: one of the charges is that in these countries, the great majority all supports one party, which i think would never happen in the united states area -- united states. [laughter] it was me as prime minister who sent a letter to brussels in 1996 asking for membership in the eu. in april 2004 as president of the country who signed the entry into the eu. for awas no other chance post-communist country, no choice, no chance to do it differently. we did not have the luxury of being kept independent, like switzerland, we did not have the luxury of being an island close to europe like great britain. we cannot afford, in the heart of europe, surrounded on all sides by eu members. we had no other chance. beginning and someone who opposes the wrong idea of european unification. i am very much in favor of european integration. since the beginning of the european process, the unification is a postcard -- post democratic concept which i cannot agree with. so my idea, i was applauding brexit decision and i think either of the countries would leave the eu or the eu would undergo a radical system of transformation, a real substantial change, otherwise the eu has no future. [applause] for thery representatives of the check embassy -- czechoslovakian embassy here. mr. o'sullivan: i'm going to ask a question about one of the issues of the day. populism is a major force in europe
