[applause] >> this investment will bring us closer to not only helping to rebuild those properties for the current residence, but more importantly to increase the number of units on those sights. to increase our housing stock in san francisco. it will accelerate the process. these are just some of the things we can accomplish under our proposed plan. these funds alone are not going to support every shelter beds bed or every affordable housing unit that we need to tackle the challenges that all of you know that we face. for making the right investments and moving these projects forward faster is the difference between someone getting housed tomorrow, and someone getting housed a year from now. what is the difference? sooner rather than later. this is about making sure that everyone h

. >> reporter: on a recent night in the potrero hill neighborhood over 300 children lined up to see the big guy in the red suit. >> merry christmas. >> making sure families who might not have the financial means have an avenue to be able to bring smiles to their kids' faces. >> reporter: and smile they did. each child here received one wrapped toy, a ball and a holiday meal. this is the third annual community awareness resources entity holiday toy give-away, a joint effort between the nonprofit, the san francisco police department, sf fire and the ymca's urban services. >> really excited. >> reporter: 9-year-old josiah and hisbrother are psyched about the gifts. >> it just brings a lot kids joy. >> i remember when i was a kid and my mom was a single mom for a while and she'd be like i'm not sure if we're going to have a good christmas and then people would come out of nowhere and give gifts for our christmas. >> reporter: care organizer and part-time elf missouri peace green said memories of her own family's financial struggles inspired the give- away which has now become a neighborhood
