officials telling nbc news he bought the semiautomatic handgun in the shooting at a store 25 miles from his home. joining me now on the phone in south carolina nbc news correspondent mark potter this purchase? >> reporter: hey, thomas. the law enforcement sources telling nbc news that dylann roof, the 21-year-old accused shooter from the charleston massacre bought his handgun at a place called shooter's choice. in west columbia south carolina. he bought the .45 caliber glock on april 11th. friends told us he used money given to him by his family for the birthday for this purchase and officials say that the sale was completely legal. even though roof had been arrested earlier that year on misdemeanor drug charge. had it been a felony he could not have bought the weapon but because it was a misdemeanor, the sale was legally allowed to go through. officials have told us that roof filled out the proper paperwork. in terms of paperwork and a cooling off period. a man identifying himself as a manager of the store asking for comments said that he could not talk about the matter but said that we do not give out our customer information. that's a quote. so again, now the gun used by d
