the train from poughkeepsie going south to new york city this morning. hello, everyone. i'm eric shawn. welcome to america's news headquarters on this sunday. >> i'm jamie colby. there are numerous emergency crews on the scene. we'll stay on the story and let you know if the numbers change. the map will show you exactly where the crash happened. for those of you who don't live in new york, it's in the bronx. basically, it was about to pull into the station, a time where you would expect the train to be slowing down. instead, it was going so fast that it literally, as eric said, flew off the tracks. we're being told that the train was headed into grand central station from poughkeepsie and there are multiple reports of injuries and fatalities. laura ingle rushing to the sk n scene, joining us live on the phone. what are you seeing and hear sng. >> i'm several yards away from the station in which this train was expected to arrive this morning. and we are just surrounded by a variety of emergency response vehicles. i have just seen one man being brought out on a stretcher,

it was traveling from poughkeepsie to grand central. a law enforcement source tells cnn the operator of the train says that he tried to apply the brakes but that the train did not stop. the operator is now being treated for his injuries. we have spoke to witnesses in the bronx and they heard the familiar screeching sound a train makes and they heard the horrible crash and this is what they saw. seven cars turned on their sides. it's far too early to speculate on what caused the accident. investigators are en route. emergency workers came here to help 100 or so passengers onboard the train. they'll look at the track and train to see what answers they can find. a lot of people are waiting for those answers. it is important to note that this is a heavily used track along the hudson. that means that metro north service is indefinitely suspended and so is service from new york to albany on amtrak. those travelers will have to find another way home this afternoon. the focus of course is on people riding on this train. four people killed. we a

there were 100 to 150 on the train a train that left before 6:00 this morning from poughkeepsie if this were in the middle of a workday you would have had hundreds and hundreds of people on that train. to see the condition of that train is breath taking. as it skidded along the dirt it was picking up dirt and stones and were then being thrown throughout the car. so you can imagine what it would be like at that speed with the movement and the train itself rolling on the side. you then had this debris that was shooting through the cars. and it was serious debris of serious size. so, it could have been much much worse. to lose four people this way, days after thanksgiving and the holiday season truly is a tragedy and reminds us all how precious a gift life really is. these are four people who left their homes this morning thinking they were going to be back and it turned out to be their last. it is a sober reminder for us to keep in mind. >> it is very, very tough to watch. i must commend your emergency services personnel who seem to be on it very, very quickly both on the ground and in th

we're told the train was headed into grand central station from poughkeepsie. we have sent laura ingle, who joins us live in the scene. what's the late nest the investigation? i know governor andrew cuomo was on scene as well as the police commissioner. >> reporter: hi, there. that's right. i did have a chance to talk to the governor and ask him when we were going to find out exactly what those investigators were up to at the time. he said of course we'll have to wait for the ntsb to come in and give us details. as i have our cameraman show you these train cars on their side, one thing we just talked about talking to the fire commissioner, they're giving dramatic details of this rescue that came this morning with the crew that got into those cars immediately. several passengers had to be cut out of their seats, out of the cars with power saws. they also had to use air bags to get up and under the train to left lift people out. when i asked them to describe more of that, some of the people were actually under the train. people were thrown out of these passenger

train was carrying 150 passengers on its way to grand central peterminal from pukim poughkeeps poughkeepsie. approached the sharp curve with a speed limit of 30 miles per hour. 70 miles per hour is the limit on the straightaway. that is what leads up to this curve. as investigators are looking very closely here at these data recorders, new york governor andrew cuomo tells cnn investigators are looking at what part, if any, speed may have played. >> there are two black boxes, one was in the cab in the front, one was in the back. they have downloaded both. that will give you the speed of the train, whether the train was going too fast. there's a 70-mile-per-hour speed limit just north of where we are. trains are supposed to slow down to about 30 miles per hour for the curve. they'll tell you if the brakes were applied, if they were, when. so that really should narrow it down. and again, if it was something that could be avoided or operator error. >> joining me now, nic robertson there at the scene of the crash. i know, nic, you were at the hospital this morning. let's talk about specifically

remember, this is a train that started in poughkeepsie, on its way to manhattan. it made nine stops. so clearly the brakes were functioning properly. so they're continuing to look. they will continue to look at the track here and the signalling into the overnight hours. they also have now talked to the engineer, and they say they will continue to talk to the engineer perhaps tomorrow. they have some surveillance video that they'll be looking at, as well, from a bridge nearby. they said the quality wasn't that good. they have sent that off to d.c. to see if they can enhance it. so they're hoping to get some more clues from that. they also have recovered the engineer's cell phone, that's standard procedure. and they'll be analyzing that to see if i any calls were made, texts sent in those critical moments. so really at this point, they're gathering all that information. they say they are beginning to know what happened. they just need to figure out the why. it's an investigation that could still take some time, but at least they have the beginning pieces, joy. >> an
