it was traveling from poughkeepsie to grand central. a law enforcement source tells cnn the operator of the train says that he tried to apply the brakes but that the train did not stop. the operator is now being treated for his injuries. we have spoke to witnesses in the bronx and they heard the familiar screeching sound a train makes and they heard the horrible crash and this is what they saw. seven cars turned on their sides. it's far too early to speculate on what caused the accident. investigators are en route. emergency workers came here to help 100 or so passengers onboard the train. they'll look at the track and train to see what answers they can find. a lot of people are waiting for those answers. it is important to note that this is a heavily used track along the hudson. that means that metro north service is indefinitely suspended and so is service from new york to albany on amtrak. those travelers will have to find another way home this afternoon. the focus of course is on people riding on this train. four people killed. we a

it's worth reporting that this train actually started in poughkeepsie and made it's way to where you are. normally this is an hour and 45 minuteroux tinminute routine tr. anything but routine this morning. what can you tell us about what lapped? happened? i can tell you what we are seeing right now i know there are four fatalities from this incident and three of the bodies have now been removed. they had gurneys and stretchers on the scene. we are waiting for an update from the 234678 ntsb who is now conducting the investigation. we have seen them milling around the four cars. i'm not sure if you can see behind me a couple of police officers and then we have the cars on it's tracks and then we have seen that all day. the ntsb is expected to give us an update later. we are not exactly sure when. but really the biggest question on everybody's mind is, how did this happen and what caused this? we know there were four unlucky passengers but there was one passenger that everyone in her car survived. all of a sudden the train felt like it was a little more sideways than it should be. and a

remember, this is a train that started in poughkeepsie, on its way to manhattan. it made nine stops. so clearly the brakes were functioning properly. so they're continuing to look. they will continue to look at the track here and the signalling into the overnight hours. they also have now talked to the engineer, and they say they will continue to talk to the engineer perhaps tomorrow. they have some surveillance video that they'll be looking at, as well, from a bridge nearby. they said the quality wasn't that good. they have sent that off to d.c. to see if they can enhance it. so they're hoping to get some more clues from that. they also have recovered the engineer's cell phone, that's standard procedure. and they'll be analyzing that to see if i any calls were made, texts sent in those critical moments. so really at this point, they're gathering all that information. they say they are beginning to know what happened. they just need to figure out the why. it's an investigation that could still take some time, but at least they have the beginning pieces, joy. >> an
