but we do know, again, four injured at the synagogue in poway, the chabad of poway there in southernnia. back to you, chuck. as these details have been coming in and you listen to what jonathan greenblatt was saying in terms of the task force and what they're trying to do to offset or prevent or deal with these unfortunate situations in a better way, what do you know of what might work or some of the discussions that are happening? >> yeah -- >> about these solutions? >> i'm glad to hear jonathan talk about that task force. a lot of this has to be intelligence driven. the problem though is that you have loners, losers and loners sitting in their basement fantasizing by becoming famous by doing great damage to some group of innocent people. so these are really, really hard cases, richard, for law enforcement to prevent. that's what's so maddening about it. these losers and loners always pick soft targets. people are vulnerable. we live in a free society. we want folks to be able to worship in any way they choose safely and securely. but the idea of hardening all these targets is reall

we're here at the poway chabad community center in poway on the corner of summerfield.sheriffs told us that there was an active shooter situation. they responded to that 911 call. we spoke to many neighbors who live in this area. they told me they heard about six to seven shots, silence, a couple people screaming, and then six to seven shots again. he told me he is not a gun expert however he did say it sounded something like a semi automatic weapon. we also spoke to a woman whose husband is currently still inside the chabad community center. she told me that sher husband told h her husband told her over the phone that woman was shot and taken to the hospital. and the rabbi who was conducting service this morning was also shot. he had two fingers blown off of his hand but still tried to calm down the congregation and shooter. he was later sent to the hospital as well. now, in terms of what is going on right now, the entire area has been as you can see taped off by the sheriff's department. they are telling me that there is no danger to the community anymore because they

i poway was injured. the chabad of poway was hosting a path celebration.ing from close to the scene, the chief of police described how a teenage suspect had been arrested. as this incident was unfolding, a police officer was en route to the scene, he was monitoring the police department dispatch and the sheriff dispatch, he heard the call has started making his way towards this goal. has he was on the road, he also overheard the scanner as a suspect to report he was involved in shooting and his location, which was read out and as our officer was exiting the freeway, he saw the vehicle, the suspect jumped exiting the freeway, he saw the vehicle, the suspectjumped out of the car and was immediately taken into custody by the san diego police department. as the officer was placing this 19—year—old man into custody, he clearly saw a radical sitting on the front passenger seat of the suspect vehicle. the suspect was taken into custody without any further incident. the incident comes amidst heightened security at synagogue, six months to the day after a gunman ki

you mentioned poway. we're been talking about the targeting of places of worship. do you know, can you say if these were houses of worship, these targets? >> reporter: those details we don't yet have. we hope to have it more from officials later on. obviously one thing officials are always worried about in the wake of any incident or copy cat attacks. it's too soon to say what the characteristics of this attack are whether we're talking the international terrorism route, whether we're talking domestic terrorism. but again, the fbi having their hands full in california in the span of a week with three incidents? >> one more for you, josh, and then i'll let you go. for all the domestic or even international terror attacks we cover, i'm always wondering how many are we unaware of because they were thwarted by law enforcement. can you respond to that? >> reporter: absolutely. i can tell you i vetted always the concern is what you don't know. you have law enforcement officers that are obviously aggressively working to detect threats. there are a number of systems in pla

three other people were injured in the shooting at the habad synagogue, in the city of poway, in sango county. our north america correspondent, chris buckler has the story. the attack happened as a passover celebration was being held at the synagogue in poway near san diego. it is understood police had issued a warning shortly beforehand and were investigating reports of a man armed with a gun. a police officer, k—9 officer was in route to the scene, he was monitoring both the san diego dispatch and the sheriff dispatch and heard the call, started making his way towards this call. as our officer was exiting the freeway, he clearly saw the suspect in his vehicle, the suspect pulled over, jumped out of his car with his hands up and was immediately taken into custody by the san diego police department. the mayor of the city says one person has been killed and several others injured. the motive for the shooting is not yet known, but many synagogues in the us had increased their security following an attack in pittsburgh six months ago that left 11 people dead. and you can keep up to date

it happens in poway. 19-year-old suspect is booked on one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder. investigators say he acted alone. and friends mourning lori kaye's death say her husband who was a physician rushed to the synagogue to help after he heard there had been a shooting only to find out the person who whom he was giving cpr was his own wife. >> he did run to the scene when he heard a very loud -- the biggest description i hear about what happened, how loud the gunfire was. he was told we need your help, dr. kaye, and he ran to the scene and it was after they put the signals that he saw it was lori, and he fainted. >> worry took the bull l-- lori died to protect all of us. she didn't deserve to die. she's such a kind, sweet-hearted just a good human being. >> three other people were injured in the shooting including an eight-year-old girl. they have all been treated an released from the hospital. and the mayor in the city of poway described the suspected shooter as sick and twisted.

they had gathered there for this service and were gathered there, part of the community in poway, neariego. there were reports of a man with a gun. we believe the service had already begun. when police arrived, they said there was a chaotic scene with people fleeing from the area, trying to get away from the synagogue, including children. at some stage, they were concerned there was a number of children missing but they also found some people had been injured. among the injuries were two men and a girl but there was also a woman who was taken to hospital and she has since died of her injuries. clearly police are very concerned about what they have found here and they are currently investigating the man who they believe was involved in the shooting. the suspect was apprehended as he was trying to leave the area. we understand a border patrol agent saw him. he was off duty but he fired at him, he did not injure him but he has been taken into custody and he is being questioned. this is a six months since the shooting at a synagogue in pittsburgh. pretty month -- pretty much exactly six mo

steve patterson from nbc is poway for us this morning. stephen, as a point, maybe some of the initial shock is wearing off, but it never really goes away, if you've ever covered one of these stories. how are folks in that community doing this morning? >> reporter: there's that phase of the shock you know all too well. mourning, extreme loss. obviously, this community is trying to repair itself. if you spend any time listening to that rabbi you sort of get the sense of the strength, the resiliency and tenacity of this community as it continues to push back and not be resolved to live in fear. investigators say earnest, suspected shooter in the case, in recent possession of an ar-style or long gun, every intention to kill as many people as possible inside that synagogue on saturday. in some respects, he failed. multiple witnesses say the gun malfunctioned or jammed. somewhere in the middle of that shooting spree. a retired -- sorry, an off duty border patrol agent pushing him off the parking lot after an iraq war veteran confronted him gett
