the trick is going to be to integrate those operations with air power, coalition air power and the otherhe ground to include the iraqi forces. >> how key and overriding is the role of u.s.-led coalition forces? we know there are 5,000 u.s. forces in the operation. how key is the u.s. role and can the iraqi officials pick this up once mosul, hopefully s is recaptured? >> christine, that is the big question of what happens next. the iraqi forces will have two main jobs. one is obviously to liberate the city. the next one is to make sure they can govern the city effectively without causing the types of disturbances and types of issues that caused the population of mosul to support isis when they came in over two years ago. so it will be very important that those u.s. forces there right now are really the key elements in terms of providing advice, intelligence and logistic support. they play a key role in this. vital role. the fact they are doing what they're doing is making this offensive possible. >> do we have a sense what isis has been doing inside mosul for the last two years in terms o

air force and naval air power has hammered them without siege day and night. a bunch of them have gone home. which is bad news for europe. the good news for the iraqi army. you know, we'll see how this plays out. million some odd civil yab noncombat tants struck in an urban area, 25,000 iraqi troops. several thousand isis fighters, thankfully we've got army apatchy attack helicopters and artillery there for precision stripes. but this is going to be a mess and the aftermath of it could be a humanitarian disaster if the international community doesn't act decisively. >> this must kind of amount to mechanized deja vu to look at these pictures. here are the oil wells on fire again and forgive me, but i'm looking at some of the vehicles in these pictures. some of the humvees that go back to your time in the desert. >> well that's right. and only time this time it's going to be urban combat intense involvement underground tunnels, suicide bombers, hostages, we'll try and use precision fires, but it's going to be a long haul. the only possible good outcome, the last

before we get to that just how do they use the air power do you, do you like force those isis fightersf wherever they're hiding and then the air power comes in to play? how is that used? >> well, it's up to the commander on the ground. but normally, you employ it before you get to where you want to go. soften up the area, try and take out key targets that you know about, and then as targets present themselves you alter the air strikes to where you want them. it's a pretty dynamic process. and it can be very effective. and that's what makes it effective is its flexibility. if you see a target develop you can immediately put air power on it. there are aircraft virtually orbiting standing by. so it's a pretty fast moving process. but it requires somebody on the ground to control that. and we have that now with the iraqi forces, forward and the peshmerga. >> okay. and just a final question because we have this election going on, and there's -- there's been talk especially from donald trump that we're presenting our war plans to the public and then we're fighting the battle, and that's bad.

you mentioned american air power.t appeared to be a 500 pound bomb dropped not too far away, which is an indication of just how impressive that power has been. it's the second one to be dropped over there in the last hour or so. bashika is a strategically important town about 20 kilometers from mosul. as this offensive continues you've got peshmerga fighters some four kilometers from mosul. you've also got an iraqi counterintelligence unit we're being told who are within eye shot of mosul. an important town, about 10 or 15 kilometers south of mosul, surrounded by iraqi forces inside we're told foreign fighters from chechnya, from tunisia, from morocco. this is still a hard fight, and not all units are up around mosul. there's still a lot more to be done. inside the city, preparations have been made, suicide bombers, hundreds of them, we're told, have been brought in to the city from syria, and those reports coming from residents inside. also we're told of the positioning of dozens and dozens of truck and car bombs rea
