oining us now is congressman pramila jayapal from washington. here good to see you again. >> ali, it's always great to be with you thank you for having me. >> you have long struggled to get progressive priorities into the sort of bill back when it was the other bill we were talking about and now this one. some of your progressive colleagues have argued that this is baby steps, it's not 100 percent of where you wanted to be in any particular place. how do you characterize it? >> well ali, first of all i am very proud of the progressive caucus for holding the line as you said. if you remember when the infrastructure bill came over to us, there was no build back better and there is no negotiations and there was no legislation -- passed through the house, and what you are seeing today in the inflation reduction act is significant -- in this bill and i will tell you that while i am heartbroken for the pieces that aren't in it, this is a massive step forward. it is a massive step forward in a couple of ways. first, it is really the biggest investment

let's discussion with pramila jayapal. the chair of the progressive caucus.on reduction act, it is officially being called, would be a big accomplishment. but do you understand the skepticism some of your fellow democrats are feeling right now? given the fact that this effort appeared all but dead until a week or so ago? >> well, wolf, if anybody understands that, it is probably me. i have been through many steps forward only to see many more steps backward. but look, what i've realized on capitol hill is you can never tell when there is that moment, that tipping point and at the end of the day, our eyes have to be on the prize about delivering for the american people. and this inflation reduction act as it is designed right now doesn't have everything we had in the original reconciliation bill, but it has a lot, wolf. it will bring down energy costs. it will invest in taking on climate change. it will address the fact that the subsidies for health care were going to go away in a couple of weeks and it will make sure that those costs of both health care, but

let's bring in democratic congresswoman pramila jayapal of washington state. congresswoman, this law is going to accomplish a lot. among other items, billions of dollars to combat climate change, the power for the medicare agency to negotiate some drug prices, caps for medicare out of pocket drug costs for seniors, it extends affordable care act subsidies and imposing a 15% minimum tax for large corporations. first of all, congratulations. but i'm confused about something. democrats keep calling this the inflation reduction act. plenty of experts say it's not going to reduce inflation. why is it being called that? >> well, jake, first of all, this is a huge accomplishment. and all of the things you mentioned in and of themselves, each one, is a massive transformation. we have never taken on climate change at this scale, at this level, bringing down carbon emissions by 40% by the year 2030. and investing $60 billion into environmental justice as we do that. we have never had medicare negotiating drug prices despite decades of actually trying to fight for that.
